Should i upgrade?

xDylanio

So as of right now i have a msi 980 ti, a i7-4790k, and a msi gaming 5, idk if i should upgrade any of these parts, the best thing is, all of these parts are only 6 months old, so the only reason I'm upgrading is to stay up to date with the new better pc parts.

CPU - i7-4790k

GPU - MSI 980 Ti

Mobo - MSI Z97 Gaming 5

Memory - 32 GB DDR3

Storage - 3.4 TB

It's not worth upgrading in your case.

If you want to go 4K, then upgrade the 980 TI to the 1080 (or wait for 1080 TI/Vega).

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

Do you play games that would befit from the upgrade? If you plan on gaming at 4K, obviously the upgrade is worth it. But, if you only want to play games with the 980Ti can handle comfortably, i wouldn't bother upgrading just to "stay up-to-date".

Don't ever upgrade just because newer stuff exists. Upgrade with a goal in mind. Like, if you want to buy a 4K monitor and you need a faster video card, or if a new game comes out that you can't run to your satisfaction.

For the platform, not really. CPU wise it is no big upgrade. GPU can be upgraded, but as others mentioned it is more a question if you need it. A 1080 is more powerfull, but myself would wait 1 or 2 gens.

The thing is i don't get it, i was researching the 1080's and they have a bunch of differences, like 1080 ti,  1080 classified, 1080 founders edition,  1080 hybrid,  whats the difference with all of these, which is the reason i thought i needed an upgrade

1080 TI isn't out yet. It is not the same chip as the 1080, rather it is a cut-down version of the Titan X Pascal. Therefore it is estimated to be about 90% of the performance of the Titan X Pascal, at stock clocks.

1080 Classified has a binned 1080 GPU along with extra power phases for better overclocking potential. 1080 FE is the reference card with the crappy blower cooler. 1080 Hybrid has an AIO cooler integrated with a fan.

As above. Unless you really need a blower style card avoid the FE. In general the biggest differences are the factory OC, coolers used, possibly special binned (not always so read the manufactor site) and possibly other things like extra stuff like RGB, special OC bios etc.

But right of the bat you can see the cooler as the biggest gain, since the better the cooler, the better the card can boost and also perform on a certain level + noise lvls can be very different. Don't mind factory OC to much, since Nvidia boost is so good that it boost over the factory speeds anyway.

I currently like EVGA with the ACX 3.0 coolers and MSI Gaming cards best that give a good combination between performance, temps and sound. Asus strix are good performers but a bit to noisy for my taste. If sound is a factor take the MSI gaming variants. For pure performance they are all relativly close together however. So you can pick any decent one for the lowest price imo.

So it's between the msi 1080 and 1080 hybrid, my question is, is there a chance they will make a 1080 ti hybrid? If not then i think the 1080 ti would be a better choice

There will probably be a 1080 TI Hybrid. Keep in mind that Hybrid versions of cards command a hefty price premium. Such a card might cost $700-800.

About $300-340. If it has an ASIC quality of 80% or better (use GPU-Z to see this), might get a bit more for it.

Since there is no Ti yet it can be a long wait still, because Vega is only 2nd quarter and probably late of it if not 3th. Also imo the hybrid coolers are not bad, but seeing the cost imo not worth it and a own custom loop is more viable and flexible.
