I'm currently stuck with 2 laptops and an external HDD as my computing solution and have decided to wait for the Ryzen / Vega stuff before actually building a Desktop PC

However, my data management cannot go on in this state so I have decided I might build a temporary solution which i would eventually turn into a NAS/ Home server until I finally get to build my full system.

My goal is to go with a low budget system. I ideally don't want to go over a 500€ budget but I realise this might not be possible

I will not be running windows on the system so no OS is needed. I have a monitor and other peripherals. I might look into getting a KVM eventually to share my screens with my laptops but for now synology works just fine.

I probably don't need to do a lot of heavy lifting on this. I think it should be able to handle eclipse and the JDK for most parts until it goes to its server duties.

Here's the list i came up with so far :

I went with 2x8GB of ram to use that dual channel and not fill it up with 4GBs I plan on upgrading this to 32GB once I get the other disks setup.

I plan to keep adding disks gradually, but 2TB will be enough for my needs for the moment. The plan is to use btrfs where i can supposedly easily add disks to my system without much hassle. I'm still new to the NAS world or multi disk configs in general so no idea..

So here it is, i would appreciate your input and help

Cheers,

G

Id get a pentium g4620. Basically the same speed as the i5, but cheaper.

Id get a single 16gb stick of ram.

BTRFS is nice, but no raid 5/6 for now, just saying(well it works, but don't use it)

That's a shame, I had read some encouraging posts on reddit about raid6 on btrfs and I thought the write hole was solved.

Maybe I end up with zfs then..

Regarding the pentium instead of the i3, is there a significant performance decrease? it's only 10€ cheaper here, so it won't be a big factor in the price.

Thanks for the input
