NAS Software/Operating System

I need software (linux compatible) or an operating system that i can use for a nas that I (not really me) can browse the files from spotlight search on a mac

Freenas is a good OS for that purpose but I dont know about how it interacts with mac's. you can watch some of tech syndicate's old videos on it but they may not be up to date.

looks like freenas does not work with spotlight search

I am personally using UnRaid, which supports AFP. I'm pretty sure you should be able to configure it to use spotlight search. As I don't have a Mac I unfortunately can't test it tho.
