Amp with optical input

As stated in title, asking for a friend of mine. Wants to skip buying a dac and connect the amp directly to his mobo

Optical audio is a digital signal, he's going to need a DAC to convert it to an analogue signal that the AMP can take, it's not something you can just bypass.

He can't skip a DAC if he wants to use a digital output.

 

Tell him to just get a Schiit Fulla 2.

Something like an SMSL Q5 Pro, though there should be something cheaper availlable. Can connect via USB, Composite or Toslink. Pretty decent Class D amp. Yet, as everybody else stated, he won't be able to skip a DAC, either use the one on his mobo or an external one.
