Hello All,

I have a rather strange issue.  My current workstation is having issues with the ability to mute audio.  I have a custom built PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.  The issue is as follows, I hit mute and the icon in the notification area responds accordingly, but if I then proceed to open windows explorer the audio of opening folders isn't muted.  Say I hit mute and then open iTunes and hit play, audio still passes through the speakers.  Now if I leave it unmuted open iTunes and once the application opens I hit mute the audio is successfully muted.  It seems I have to individually mute each application in the mixer, for muting the default audio device isn't enough.

I've tried uninstalling the driver and installing the latest driver for my Asus Xonar Phoebus but sadly it had zero effect.  I've restarted my PC multiple times but the problem still persists.   I've removed eset my anti-virus and re-installed the audio driver to no avail.  I'm officially stumped as to what might be causing these issues.  Currently the Xonar Phoebus is hooked up into my Logitech Z5500 speakers through the S/PDIF port.  Sadly the analog inputs on the Z5500 control station no longer work, so I can only output audio through digital coax or optical audio and the Phoebus doesn't have connections for digital coax.

If anyone has any ideas as to what may be causing my current headache I would be highly appreciative.

Thanks Again,

Seikai

Are you sure you're muting the right thing? I know with my old SoundBlaster Live! card there was a ton of stuff which could be muted.

I have two audio devices according to control panel the hdmi connection from my Geforce GTX 670 which is not connected to any device. And the Optical out from my Xonar Phoebus S/PDIF device which is set to my default audio device.  So the keyboard shortcut is sending the command to mute the audio and windows responds by displaying a muted speaker icon and when you open the mixer each application plus the device shows up as being muted but I have to un-mute then specifically re-mute the application for it to actually take effect. Simply muting the "DEVICE" isn't enough.

I would try to get on the ASUS support chat and see what they have to say about this.

If you are using keyboard to mute as in media key "Mute", it might be problem with keyboard drivers instead of soundcard itself. My X6 reacts occasionally slowly to media key commands such as volume control and I'm pretty sure its because drivers/control software is made by Microsoft.
