Dell refurbished 2016 models

As I was looking for a high-lifespan computer for a friend with a sub-1000€ budget, I had the idea to check the Dell website for promotions and found some refurbished XPS and Inspirons laptops with 10 to 40% price drops. I often find myself recommanding Dell computers, and I am looking myself for a XPS 15 (even if I don't plan to buy it right now). I'm playing a "spot the difference" game between the two generations (XPS and Inspiron Gaming models), but considering the build process and overall quality are the same as the current models,

- How much performance can the GTX960m give for a secondary/casual gaming machine? How does it compare with the 1050 and 1060?

- Same question about the i7-6700HQ compared to the new Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ

- What would I loose on the 2016 models that is/could be essential?

1. 960m is a lot slower than a 1050 or 1060 model

2. There won't be much noticeable different between the Skylake and Kaby Lake in real world use

960m is garbage, essentially a laptop 750Ti.

6700HQ and 7700HQ have a small difference, as the 7700HQ is around 700pts ahead in Passmark.

idk

I wouldn't call that 'garbage'... quite capable at 1080p

Garbage when compared to 1050Ti, anyway. It's capable at 1080p, yes.

idk

Would it be sufficient for a friend with light, casual gaming use? Like a guy I'd force to join an Overwatch or BF4 game once a month? ^^

Not many models have 1050Ti though, even the XPS 15 I want just have the regular 1050. Is it that big of a difference? I really need to find tests and benchmarks of the last mobile GPUs

Certainly good enough at medium-high settings. Overwatch at med on the Inspiron with a 6700HQ and 960M performs at 60-80FPS. BF4 would be on med and get around 70 FPS

idk

1050 is capable, but not as good as 1050Ti and only has 2G VRAM. Better than 960m by a big margin however

Same question (if you please) for this Inspiron 5000 model. I just found it in Dell FR at 700€ with a 256GB SSD, would be perfect for my friend. I guess the R7 M445 is kinda rubbish, but would it run popular multiplayers game at acceptable performances?

The US website is actually much better than its french counterpart ^^

Thanks for the links. the XPS 15 actually have a 4GB VRAM. Do I consider it in the middle of the 1050 and 1050Ti ?

Sry, I don't know much about GPUs especially the new ones.

The difference between a 960m and a 1050 is actually very impressive, you can more than double the performances. How did Nvidia achieved that much of a step?

I can't advise him to get a GTX960m for such a big difference.

I'd actually get a similar score with a 1050 than with my desktop (3 generation behind) GTX 670.

Damn, Passmark at 863 for the R7 M445. Rubbish it is...

Nvidia optimised their architecture and realised that they can reuse the desktop architecture on laptops. It's really awesome, and they started it with the 980 on mobile just before the release of the 1000 series. The x50 cards have always been low-wattage cards, so they're being used in mid-high end laptops. 1050 is just 75w, and combined with a 45w HQ or QM series processor, you've got a formidable gaming machine.

Yes, it's around the middle. The 2GB holds the 1050 desktop back.

idk
