Ok.. here is the deal. I've got a new samsung 960 evo ssd advertised as the fastests consumer grade ssd on the market. Its performance is amazing, but I've got a problem that has started to bother me. Im using this device as a boot drive for my pc. The problem is that it boots really slow, slower than a sata ssd. It takes like 22 seconds to boot. I find this unusual because the ssd's read and write speeds are over 2gbps. I was researching online and found some similar results from people with the 950 evo. I know its something releated to my motherboard bios configuration and the time it takes to POST. Anyone around here know what type of configuration can I use to get faster boot time. My rig: asus z170-a motherboard; intel core i5 6600k oc to 4.5 gz; 850w evga supernova psu; 16gb of hyperX 2400 hz DDR4 RAM; dual evga geforce gtx 1080 SC edition. One of my questions is the fact that the nvme slot lies just to the right of the pcie slot where I have my second 1080 plugged. Do you think that the heat from the 1080 could be causing performance issues with my 960 evo? My other question is what kind of settings can I use on my z170-a bios so I can get faster boot times. I'm hopping someone knows or that someone from linus crew has some insight on the matter.

Are you making sure that your SSD is connected using PCIe 3.0 4x?  Also, make sure that only your primary boot drive and nothing else.

Also if it's taking a long time to boot, I doubt it's heat related.  Heat related issues would likely show up in something with more continuous or extended I/O workloads like gaming rather than just booting up.

I use a 950 PRO as my boot drive and I'm at the desktop in 10 seconds. (The 960 EVO is my second drive)

I'm also on a Z170 motherboard.

I suggest you get into the UEFI BIOS and start disabling legacy features you don't need.

By default, all the backwards compatibility will be turned on.

I have just about all the legacy options disabled.

I even disabled the unused PCIe slots.

You could try enabling a Fast Boot option but I found it to be unnecessary and caused me more trouble than it was worth.

Mostly, just get into the UEFI and see what things you can remove from the startup sequence that could help get things moving faster.
