ssd with 1 cable?

i just bought a samsung 250gb 850evo ssd and i have seen vids of people plugging in a small sata cable but not a small and big one and it still works... i plugged my small sata cable into my ssd and mobo booted and nothing happened. do i need to use 2 cables?  i dont have a wide one

You do need to use two cables. The wide one connects to the power supply.

the big one is for power, the small is for data.. u probably either saw them not finish/hiding it to seem like they  have cable management and or they used a usb-sata cable

A wide one is just both the power and data cables being connected to each other on the drive end

You need both sata data (small) and sata power connectors from your PSU.

What PSU do you have it should have extra sata power connections for the drive unless you have run out.

i have a prebuilt

In that case as long as the PSU is decent quality you can get a sata splitter like this:
