GPU Upgrade

Hi guys, this is my first post here because I'm looking for help in upgrading my system, I have an AMD xfx 290x and I'm looking to upgrade my GPU on a budget. I'm looking to be able to run games to come and high-quality VR games for the near future and am looking for a little extra horsepower. I would say mid range 300 or so dollar cards is my target group of gpus. and I was wondering if it would be smarter to wait and buy a flagship GPU from Nvidia like a 1080, or pay 300 or so for another AMD GPU like a fury or 290x2 and run it crossfire.

note the rest of my system is:

8 gigs of ram (soon to be 20 gigs of ram),

1 terabyte hard drive,

AMD fx 8350,

800-watt power supply,

and i will give my motherboard soon, im making this post at school and i don't have my system in front of me.

I found a 8GB RX480 on craigslist for 220 if i did get it would it make sense to run it crossfire if i still wanna hold on to my 290x or is it more worth it to try to sell my 290x

Where is a good place to sell my gpu. ive never sold any of my parts. Also what CPU would be a good investment, im looking to switch to an i7

So i found a 1070 for only 400 or so. would that be the best investment, or a 1080 for full price
