The Ethernet Cable From Hell

New year, old problems.

 

A couple months I went and bought a pre-crimped 15m (roughly 50 feet) Cat 5e cable.

15m is far from the 100 (ish) meter limit for ethernet cables, so it's not a data loss problem due to distance.

I've checked continuity using a multimeter, everything is fine, no shorts no crossed connections.

 

Now the weirdness begins!

I connect it from my router to my PC. Windows is showing connectivity, but there is no internet access.

I connect it to a secondary running Windows 10, no connectivity, stuck on identifying.

I connect it from a switch to a secondary PC. Nada.

I connect it from the router to a switch and to a secondary. Zilch.

 

 

Anyone have any theory about what's going on?

Make sure router is properly set up. Does another cable work?

everything else works. it's just that cable that is possessed.

If you have a cable tester, you can try testing the cable with it.

Also make sure that both ends are properly wired.

Not an expert by any means, but if the wiring is correct standard both ends, only thing I can think of is the connectors are not connecting properly.

Personally I make my own cables, cat6e and never have any problems that can't be fixed easily. Most of the time they come out perfect every time. I would invest in a roll of cable, cable stripper/punch down in one, Crimping tool and some decent wire cutters, cable tester and connectors... all-in about $80 or so for half decent cable and tools. 305 Metres of cable you will then have to play with, it's not hard at all, you can pick up the skill within a few hours easily.

You then also have the benefit of creating your own bespoke length cables, cutting down on unsightly over-abundance of wire stuck behind your equipment.

Don't have a cable tester anymore (240V through one end makes for nice fireworks), but I did check for interrupts in the cable and there are none. Both ends are properly wired as far as I can tell (got the idea that it could be a crossover cable somehow and it turns out it isn't)

Let me test that theory. I have some high tension couplers somewhere.

I'm just trying to figure out what could be wrong. Will just go buy some proper cable and make my own once my new crimper shows up

Fixing a shitty Omron mouse switch right now. Will be back with news.

Make sure that both ends are in proper color order and all the wire ends are fully pressed in, otherwise the connectors might not make contact with the wires in the cable.

FOUND THE PROBLEM!

 

The pins on the RJ45 plugs are pushed down too far. The cable works just fine using high pressure female to female connectors. Looks like I'll have to replace the plugs to get a working cable
