Cord or headset

Yesterday while in a skype call I yelled into my mic as you do and it stopped working, at first I assumed it was just temporary but it's the next day and it still isn't working fully. I am hoping at this point it's the cord and not my headset or my pc. If I have the cord plugged into the proper female ports my audio works but my mic doesn't. so I've had my audio connector in the mic port which allows me to use it a little, but I then have to use my speakers as audio. But from what I've been told it's extremely quiet and sounds like I'm under water. I'm wondering if I screwed my headset or could I buy a new cord, I was also thinking maybe would buying a usb sound card work, such as https://www.amazon.ca/external-Adapter-Windows-Microphone-SD-CM-UAUD/dp/B001MSS6CS might fix the issue as it might overall increase quality and it's cheaper then a cord.

If in fact I have just screwed my headset what would be a good replacement. I've been looking around and as much as I want to get the best quality I can afford I can't justify spending half or more of the money I currently have to replace something I use a lot but at the same time not very much. I also don't really want to own headphones and a mic worth more then my computer. The cheapest thing that seems worth is from what I've seen is ATH-m30x and something like the modmic, but even with that it's not much cheaper then some of the other options I've been looking at. I was also looking at the NW-800 the same usd apdater and a tripod desk stand which totals around $65 CAD, and like I said I want something good quality like the neewer but don't know for sure if it's the best option or if I want a desk mic.

If you know what's wrong with my current headset give me some suggestions and if it's broken or not and you have some good replacement options for around $150 CAD lmk. I may go up a little but really don't want to spend much.

$150 CAD for mic and headphones or just headset. I play fps games like CS GO so anything good for that with overall good audio would be nice.
