As above, its definitely worth going for a i5. I had a i3 6100 paired with a 470 and it bottlenecked the Gpu like crazy. Games like GTA only utilized about 50% of my GPU's power. I upgraded to a i5 6400 which I have overclocked (on a z170 motherboard) and its a great combo.

GTA V hates dual cores. Even i3 hyperthreaded dual cores.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

An i3 and i5 are no different to an OS, they both have 4 threads, the only different is performance across all threads, which compared to the i5 6400 with it's low clock speeds, actually isn't too much

Otherwise pretty much the above build

Although there is a 1080p 75Hz TN free-sync display around that price, gotta check reviews though, also check for LG's IPS equivalent, dunno if it's in the US yet though

4C > 2C/4T

Hyperthreading doesn't produce the same results as physical cores. The i3 looks like a quad to the CPU, but in reality, it's just not as powerful as an i5 when it comes to the type of intense, constant calculations that GTA V requires when you're, say, blasting down a busy city street (in more ways than one). Between people, objects, physics, explosions, etc., an i3 is going to bog down much more quickly than an i5 would. There have been plenty of YouTube videos and written-up tests to demonstrate pretty conclusively that a dual core with two additional threads will vastly outperform a dual core without, but a dual with hyperthreading cannot keep up with a true quad.

Compared to an i5 with the same clock speeds, no it's not as fast, but it's perfectly fine for 60hz gaming, and it has 4 threads, which is all GTAV and Far Cry 4 requires to run properly, as well as future games

It's not completely broken like it would be on say a G3258

and in most games with reasonable, not insane settings like Metro Last light here, it can get over 60fps, they're even reporting 100fps avg in GTAV below

http://www.techspot.com/review/1087-best-value-desktop-cpu/page4.html

Hell in most of the games it's keeping up with the i5, probably due to it's rather high clock speeds, since a lot of multi-threaded games aren't like 100% splitting the load, most of the work is on Core 0, and having that be at 3.7ghz for the i3 6100 is highly useful as seen in this comparison here

Thanks guys. I'll go for HKzerofive's build but with the AOC G2260VWQ6. The i3 is okay for now as the i5 6400 is not a sweet sot for me, I'll just try to save up for an i5 6500 for a higher clockspeed

If you mean buying that later, you're better off jumping to an i7 from an i3 for a true upgrade

I'd rather go with i5 6600k, I mostly game on pc and don't do any video rendering etc. The i7 is not a big difference over an i5 in terms of gaming maybe ~5 fps

It's more just to have the 8 thread CPU you never need to replace, plus for a K part you'd need a more expensive Z170 motherboard *Don't NEED exactly, but it's pointless to use a K part on a non overclocking chipset

Where as you could just throw in an i7 6700 to a H110/B150/H170 board and not worry about overclocking

You don't make little upgrades in my book, that's a waste of money

That's an option too. Thanks
