Advanced calibration guide?

Hey people,

 

 

So I just got my first 1440p 144hz monitor and decided to try and calibrate it, I've never done much before just the built in windows tools and adjusting settings on the monitor but this time I'm looking for going one step further, whats the next step before buying calibration tools and whats a decent amature tool that does not cost hundreds of pounds?

Open this page up and go through the images.

Also once you have set it in nvidia control panel. Install this little piece of software. http://goebish.free.fr/cpk/
Open it and press the start button.
Save it, then select lock profile.
This will force the nvidia calibration to be used in your games.#

I always use it myself.

i have been considering that my monitor's Gamma is a little off, but what?

You don't really need to calibrate unless you are doing vital color work

Having a monitor set up properly makes a huge difference in gaming, colours can look deeper, dark scenes look better etc.
Suppose it depends on the monitor you have though.
IPS will probably be great out of the box.

Put the image in the middle of your screen.
Adjust your gamma and try to make the ones on the left labelled 48% blend at the 2.2 mark.
Then go to black level and make sure you can see all the squares, even the darkest one, though it should be hard to see.
Also do it in a dark or very dim room.

You will see a kinda smooth blending,
This pic is taken from the "what it should look like part"
You see around the 2.2 mark on the left, the red kinda blends in to a smooth blur around the 2.2 mark? That's what you aim for, without ruining the blacks on the black level test.

Yeah, TN can be pretty bad out the box.
