SOME TOUGHTS PLEASE

Go to solution Solved by Freezanator,

@ferdzxc I suggest you get the Toshiba drive. Based on Backblaze (cloud backup company), Seagate's drives have a larger annual failure rate compared to Toshiba drives. :) Cumulative Q1 2016 Hard Drive Failure Rates

I'd say the Toshiba drive due to a personal dislike of Seagate. I'd see other people's opinions first, but I've had good experiences with Toshiba drives - I have a machine from 2009 still rollin along on a 320GB Toshiba drive.

idk

i have hard drives of all brands and sources, and honestly... i dont care.

i got a pair of 3TB toshiba drivers for my home server, mostly "for the lulz" because they were cheap compared to other options that are deemed higher quality, and honestly so far i'm very satisfied. they're not the performance series tho, they're regular cheapo plebdrives, but oh do they work well :P

BIG OL PICTURE AND SOME BROKEN TEXT AROUND IT

Come back to me when you have fair numbers and equal amounts of drives tested with same deploy dates.

it's not fair when they test 4000 seagate drives and 150 toshiba drives and say 'oh hey toshiba won'

idk

i know someone's gonna rant about backblaze, so i'm gonna add this:

yes, backblaze's testing is very, very flawed, they torture these drives in a way they really shouldnt, but fact is that if two drives are the same price bracket, one has catastrophic failures troughout the test samples, and the other one is rock solid, it's at least a legitimate warning for further investigation for those that fail left and right.

between the seagate 3TB plebdrives i have, and the infamous seagate 3TB drives, i found a very interesting difference in user reviews:

on the toshiba plebdrive, it's nothing but satisfied people, including someone using them in a NAS/server workload similar to backblaze (although smaller scale)

on the seagate drive... it's a 50/50 split in reviews between these two rough generalizations:

- died after 6 months, very unsatisfied

- i have the drive for 3 months and it works fine, everyone who says they die are liars.

only this sheer amount of "self-fullfilledness" among the seagate crowd honestly puts me off from buying the drives. it's a sad statement to make, but it's my honest feeling about the product at this point.

they dont say toshiba won, they just say "hey, we used this many of these drives, and this many died"

and honestly, i see seagate 3TB drives die left and right, in all fields of tech.

Other than coming here and bombarding others, can't you just give your own opinion and let OP decide for himself with the information that has been given to him?

i honestly think some people on this forum have a browser plugin scanning the forum for the word "backblaze" to come insert blind hate, most of the time not even properly reading the post that mentions them.
