Can these two rams run together?

I have a HP z420 and want to upgrade the ram, this guy had the same problem on reddit but the ram linked is out of stock. So doing a quick amazon search im wondering if it will work on my pc. Thanks

It should, but things get dicey when it comes to OEM builds. If you're going for a direct replacement or add-in, it would likely work.

 

I would suggest checking HP's website for supported RAM as the timings and bandwidth may not support.

What is the specific config that did not boot? Did you mix the 4 and 2 GB sticks?

There is nothing wrong mixing 2 and 4. I might mix 4 and 8 too

As long as the ram dims all run at the same speed, it theoretically should work.

Yeah, but both ECC and OEM stuff can be quite tricky. There should be a full compatibility list though.

Do you run them in asymmetric dual channel? Or is each channel running equal (or just 1) sticks?

Couldn't find anything on HP's site because my pc is no longer supported, but found a pdf that says:  8 DIMM slots; Up to 64 GB (8x8GB) ECC unbuffered DDR3-1866 (Transfer rates up to 1866 MT/s). idk if that will matter or not. Also on my pc it says "Use only approved PC3 DDR3 DIMMs" I have no clue what its talking about but is it still compatible?

What's the model number for your PC?

These are the models that the PC supports. I would advise buying only one of these. If you have a friend that will let you borrow RAM as a test, it would help see if any will still pass POST.

so im guessing the one that i was planning to get does not fit into any of these models? Looking at amazon theres ONE stick of 8 gb for $150 lol a bit much for just 8 gb

Like I said, find a friend with RAM and check if his will work. You can try buying some RAM and seeing if it'll work as well.
