Hi guys,

my sister needs a new laptop.

she is not a gamer at all, she need it for studing and work, nothink too demanding.

I narrow it down to 2 laptops.

i wanted : i5,8GB RAM,touch screen, 14"/15.6".

Now i need help deciding:

Both are 14" lenovo yoga with 8GB RAM.

One has a newer CPU both no sshd.

The other has a one generation older hard drive but sshd.

what do you think would benifet her more?

***The one with the newer CPU cost about 25$ more.***

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 510 80VB003HIV

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 510 80S7001NIV

Please provide links to both laptops, can't really find them by googling their names.

Asus X99-A w/ BIOS 3402 | Intel i7 5820k OC @4.4GHz 1.28V w/ Noctua NH-U14S | 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 OC @2666MHz 12-14-14-28 | Asus Geforce GTX970 STRIX OC | EVGA 750 G2 750W | Samsung 850 Evo 1 TB | Windows 10 64-bit | Be-Quiet Silent Base 800 w/ Silent Wings | 2x Dell U2414H OC @72Hz w/ Display Port

Ahh I see.

By the way didn't see your poll at first. TBH there seem to be little practical differences between CPU generations these days, though I don't know how much this affect laptops.

As for storage, I've had an SSHD before and I don't think it was worth it. It's a great misconception out there that an SSHD will have an SSD unit acting as a some sort of cache, but that's not true.

Instead, the SSHD monitors what files you use the most and then place them in the 8 GB SSD section so your most common files load faster. I don't think this applies to system files as that would be kinda risky. As for installed programs, this might result in a faster web browser in theory, but I don't know how it works with moving around program install files.

So without keeping SSHD in mind, and also keeping in mind the statement from Seagate that 5400RPM vs 7200RPM doesn't affect speed by themselves - I would go with the one with the better CPU... if I only could choose betwen the two of them.

Personally I would keep looking and see if I could find a laptop with an SSD of 250 GB or so instead, it's not necessarily that much more expensive.

Can't you find a lapptop with an actual SSD inside ? Or are they too expensive ?

I have a 6200U and it's running just fine, so i guess i'll trade a slightly better CPU for a better HDD if I could only choose from those 2

Its about 100$ extra for a yoga with the same specs and a ssd.

If it was for me i would add those extra 100 dollars, but my sister prefer to won't go over 850$ plus or minus. (the models i posted cost in israel 860 USD and 886 USD).

Mention to her that SSD vs HDD isn't about any overall performance improvement, such as comparing different speeds on CPUs - this is about a literal day and night difference.

Not to mention that the performance of an SSD will remain constant until the day it die, while an HDD will eventually degrade over time and become slower until it die. By investing in an SSD, she may avoid having to buy a new laptop in 3 years or so because the HDD has slowed down, which can actually save her money in the end.

For a laptop I would even prioritize the SSD over the RAM. It's just much more simple to add in more RAM into later on on a laptop than it is to upgrade to an SSD for the laptop in the future. Not to mention having an SSD and 4 GB vs 8 GB and an HDD will still mean better performance on the SSD/4GB -side.

Having 8 GB of RAM for casual browsing and mild workloads and such is more about futureproofing, technically 4GB is acceptable for such applications, it's just that eventually you may reach a point where you need more, but then you can just add more in. Just make sure the laptop actually supports adding in more RAM.

But to actually help you... Hopefully I got things right with the conversion from/to the Israeli site (sorted from cheaper to more expensive):

15.6"

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=36402 (this one doesn't say anything about Windows OS?)

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=35898

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=35899

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=35900 (all these three above have 4GB RAM onboard, but can be expanded to 8GB)

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=36318

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=36371

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=36373 (these three abore are slightly over your budget, but they're the best in this list, and Asus is probably one of the most reputable brands for laptops. These ones also have GeForce GPUs, which are beneficial if she eventually starts playing some casual games)

14" (no optical drives) edit: forgot to mention which ones had 4 GB on these, but just take a look at it on the pages.

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=36455

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=35530

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=35529

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=35485 (slightly above your budget, but it has a touchscreen)

http://en.ksp.co.il/?uin=35535 (also slightly above your budget)

Don't forget too ask her how much storage she needs. Because of course an SSD won't matter if it's simply too small. But given what she'll do on the PC that shouldn't be any problem.
