So Christmas is around the corner and deals are popping up everywhere. I want to get some new speakers, but I need(or want) an amp. However, I still find headphones useful. Are there any good DAC/amp combo units out there? I've looked around, but I want something trustworthy for under $100.

better off getting new speakers, unless its a really good pair

then get a DAC.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

I've put some thought into that too, but I use my headphones a lot and want the ability to switch between the 2 at ease. That's why I'm looking for a combo unit.

hold up, what headphones are you even using?

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M

Wait, you want an amp for headphones or for speakers? It's not exactly clear in your wording.

You can rarely get DAC/Amp combos for passive speakers [if at all?], if that's what you're talking about.

If you're talking about headphone DAC/Amp combos, you've got quite a few good options. I'll list a few and give short thoughts, but do your own further research.

FiiO E10K: By far the most well known and recognized DAC/Amp. Known to work well, sound good, and is small enough to be portable, but not too tiny for desk use.

SMSL M3: Cheaper competitor to the E10k. Sound is about equal from what I've read, has visualization which may be useful. Volume knob is larger than E10k, doesn't have bass boost like the E10k [it sucks though to be honest]

SMSL SD793-II: Essentially an SMSL M3 but with no visualization [and maybe less inputs, I can't remember]. Get this if you don't care about visualization.

Micca Origen+: Most expensive of the bunch, but well worth it in my opinion. Smallest as well, but has an amazing form factor which makes it a dream to use for desk use. Knob is great, best sounding, most useful features. Has both 6.3mm and 3.5mm jacks. I love mine.

Don't tread on me. I squish, and white liquid comes out. It's icky, trust me.

Your question is not stated clearly enough to answer.

  • Are you considering passive or powered/active speakers? Are you considering a specific model?
  • What headphones are you/will you be using?
  • Is there anything appreciably wrong with your onboard sound?

I can tell you that if the answer to the last question above is "no", you are not likely to benefit from a DAC/amp combo in the sub-$100 range. Unless you need specific features like adjustable pre-amp out (Micca-Origen) for example, it'll be a waste of money.
