I'm looking to replace my Klipsh pro media 2.1 with a smaller system the sounds equal, if not better than these units.

I am trying to decide between the Audio Engine A5+ ($319 on Amazon), Creative Labs BlasterX Katana ($279 on mass drop), or the Bose Companion 5 ($399.99).

If you guys know a better 2.0 with a better low end or a better 2.1, please let me know.

I like the look of the bose over the A5+ but I like the idea that the a5+ has the better sq over bose.

I just wish there was more reviews of the Katana. The only one out there is the one from HardwareCanucks and it shows the Katana being better than the Bose Companion 20.

I have the A5+ an I'm very happy with them. Sure, the bass is a bit odd, cause there is no subwoofer, but honestly, i dont really need it. Oh, and they look amazing!

Would you say it can replace the need of a sub?

It really depends. Before the A5+, I had A 2.1 from Wavemaster (it was just 50 bucks and sounded amazing for that price). Even some Logitech and such have more bass than the A5+, since Audioengine wants to deliver a clear sound, without software tricks to enhance Bass, like some other manufacturers do. This resulst (and I'm really not an audiophile) in a very true tone. The Highs are amazingly sharp but not shattering. The mids are cool as well. The bass is kinda pointing into your chest, so you don't get that lovely feeling in your stomach.

A Sub would defenetly add to the experience if you're watching a lot of movies with it, but for just PC use (Youtube, some music and gaming) it's enough for me (I even watch movies with them). It's kinda on the edge where most people wouldn't need a sub, but if you're serious about audio and especially movies, yeah you need some sort of sub attached to it.

Also have a look on Linus' video about the A5+

Feel free to ask whatever about them, I'll  answer everything I can ;)

If I'd have to pick between there three, I'd go Bose because.. Well' it's Bose, you cannot got wrong with this Brand.

But then again it's Bose, so if money is an important factor to you, I'd recommend picking something else.

But these days, Bose is a marketing company; not an audio company. They don't make very good products.

Do you have the speakers being power from a dac or on board sound?

First I had the on board sound, but after a month or so I bought a DAC from Fiio. It gets rid of the noise when no sound is playing and improves overall clarity a bit. It's surely a good upgrade but it's not absolutely necessary I'd say
