SSD Installation Question?

Go to solution Solved by Imaginaerum,

To use the speed benefit for your SSD it would be best to reinstall Windows, and unplug your hard drive while doing so, that way you know all Windows files are going on your SSD. Then you can plug your HDD back in and use it as a storage like you would anything else.

If you're using an Intel system you could setup Intel SSD Caching, which combines your SSD and HDD as one drive. It moves your most used programs to the SSD automatically so you get the speed you want, and generally just manages everything for you.

I built a gaming PC a couple months ago, and am planning on installing an SSD soon. I want to keep my 500gb Western Digital hard drive, but install the OS on the SSD. I just want Windows 7 to be running on the SSD, and save the "mass storage" just for most games and applications. Would I have to reinstall Windows? Or just set up through the BIOS?

I'm fairly sure a lot of SSD's come with software for moving files from a hard drive to the SSD although I haven't tried any yet so can't promise you anything.

CPU: AMD FX-8350 | CPU Cooler: H80i | Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 | RAM: 8GB Kingston Beast 1866MHz

Case: Define R4 | GPU: Gigabyte GTX 780ti | PSU: Corsair CX600M | SSD: 250GB Samsung 840 EVO

Since all of my data is on the 500gb drive, I would still have all of my data and games on there right? No data would go away or reset?

If you used Intel Cache then it would probably get formatted over, if you don't use Intel Cache and install your OS on the SSD, your data will still be on the 500GB drive.
