Am server ubuntu newb

So, I've been told the best way to learn to use server ubuntu is to dive in headfirst and learn as I go. first thing I tried to do was sudo apt-get update, and I've gotten an error. can I get some help?

DNS is not configured/working, you need to configure it to get get the server connected to the internet.

 

Had the same problem myself doing the same thing, never solved it, switched to Ubuntu with GUI.

I've heard using server ubuntu is more efficient for server stuff because it lacks a gui, will the desktop version result in significant performance drops?

depends on the hardware I guess, there will always be a slight drop. I never had any issues, but my server is definitely well equipped so running a GUI wasn't an issue.

Hey, fixed my own problem. So it turns out if your ethernet cable isn't plugged in and the pc has no wifi card, dns can't configure properly and won't let your pc access the Internet

no, and if you have a monitor connected you may as well use it.

to confirm DNS is the issue try:

ping -c 3 www.google.com

have a look at /etc/networking/interfaces

this is from Debian, I dont use Ubuntu server but should work.

interfaces should have something like this:

auto eth0 
iface eth0 inet static or dhcp
address x.x.x.x
netmask x.x.x.x
gateway x.x.x.x
dns-nameservers X.X.X.X 

You can set the DNS to your router, your ISP's DNS or google's which is 8.8.8.8 and then run

sudo ifdown eth0
sudo ifup eth0
