Im either going to get a carbon msi board if I go am3+ or a z170 from Asus if I go lga1151

dont go AM3. Zen is getting a new socket so there will not be any upgrade options for AM3 owners

But it's cheaper right now for higher end stuff

AM3+ is not higher-end at all, sadly. Go LGA 1151. As for the GPU, if I were you I'd choose MSI or EVGA - those companies apparently have the best customer support in case you need an RMA or some help.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

I've actually heard MSI's customer support is pretty bad

Hmmm, I've usually heard the contrary. Of course, it depends on the country cause it's different everywhere, but in general it should be quite a bit better than ASUS which is known for having poor customer service AFAIK

I'm leaning msi because I don't want to go over board on the white, but I can get an 8 core 4.0 Ghz fx CPU for 189 on amazon

MSI is a good choice, but the CPU not necessarily. I mean, it wouldn't bottleneck the 1060 badly in most games, but an i5-6500 also costs 190$.

If you're only gaming and your GPU is a 1060, I'd get this CPU instead: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/xwhj4D/intel-cpu-bx80662i56500

Considering the 6500 kicks its ass for two dollars more, unless you're rendering I wouldn't go that route. Cores and GHz are useless metrics since AMD's IPC is so much lower

Sorry that I'm asking noobie questions, but what is ipc

Instructions per cycle. More GHz means the CPU can perform more cycles per second, but since AMD's architecture is so old now and intel is so much more efficient with its cycles that it can perform more instructions at a lower clockspeed

So what would u equate to the fx8370 from intel

And is there a metric like instructions per second?

So an i5 is way better

for games look at bench marks and the FX series has a serious design flaw. Every two cores shares one FPU so it can only run at 50% running floating point heavy applications like games. I would normally only recommend FX for compiling software and running virtual machines because thats the only area where it competes and is cost effective. I dont recommend it at all since I learnt that Zen will not be continuing the AM3+ socket. get an i3 or i5 for your 1060.
