<$1000 General/Gaming/Longevity

So, my current desktop is slowly dying, as it should. It's a 5 year old FX 4100 - bulldozer architecture. I've been an AMD customer for the last 15 years; you can blast AMD all you like, but it does what I want and is in my price point. If I can hang in until Zen comes out, I might, but my patience is wearing thin with the trouble I've been having lately. I'll be upgrading from an AMD FX4100, 8gb DDR3, 3g R9-280.

Build:

There's a few things I need to address: Budget is $1000 USD. I have financing through Newegg (hence that retailer). OS goes on small SSD, Steam on large SSD. I can still transfer my current SSD's and HDD over for more storage, and transfer my current PSU to transfer money elsewhere, although I like the semi-modular design to keep the new build clean.

Intended Uses:

  • General Use - I use Chrome, Pandora, office, general photo editing software, and Sketchup. Nothing crazy intensive.
  • Gaming - I don't play many AAA titles but I do enjoy modded Fallout and Skyrim. I also enjoy Minecraft. Resolution: 1080p on a 60hz monitor suites me just fine.
  • Size - I'm fairly over large cases with lights and fans and generally attempting to use a computer that sound like a vacuum. Hence the mini-itx. I also connect through WiFi.

Concerns:

  • Is purposing choosing such a low end CPU just pure folly? Aside from future proofing - Given that most of my performance woes are video card intensive, I don't see a necessary need for a higher CPU.
  • I5 6600 vs I3 6100 - I believe the I5 is a better CPU, but it's a matter of 4 cores 0 threads vs 2 cores 4 threads. How much is that really going to affect my everyday use/gaming? And, lets be honest, the I3 blows away my old AMD anyways.
  • I specifically chose the 8gb RX470 due to my modding habits. Nvidia in the same price point is < 1/2 the card. But how does that relate to value in performance/dollar?
  • At the current time, there is no use in investing in AMD hardware as it literally is not an upgrade. I could buy more cores, but that isn't going to net me much better performance.

Load times are a beast on modded Fallout and Skyrim, which is directly affected by storage on either an SSD or an HDD. My current Fallout 4 load times (with minimal modding) are close to a minute on an HDD.

The mixup between a 470/480 is a typo. I know it's a 470 and meant a 470.

I would get a 250gb ssd and 1tb hdd. Opt in for a Crucial MX300 for cheaper. For a limited budget I would not get high end samsung

I have a 2 tb internal HDD so I don't need to buy more conventional storage.

Also get a better PSU. A corsair cx 450m will do fine. (if you have that psu already then keep it)

I guess I can't keep my current Rosewill 430 psu (I bought that back in 2011!)

You guys sure 450 watts is enough? Most video card manufacturers recommend 500.
