Hello all, my first post and I need some help.

For the linus media group, I think it's Desil who edits all the videos, is that correct? It would be great if i could ge some advice from him but i doubt this message will be passed down to him! I love every video and how proffesional you guys have become!

I am doing an Extended Project for College (I'm 18 and from the UK and I watch TTL too ;) ) with the title - What is the best personal video editing computer that can be built for under £300?

May I ask someone to answer this questionnaire I have created? Thanks everyone, This will help my research so much!

Robert Smith.

Video Editing Questionnaire

For my extended project, I am building an editing PC and writing about my research with the title – “What is the best personal video editing computer that can be built for under £300?” The price limit is an average price of a whole computer + some headroom for upgrades. Please answer these questions to the best of your ability. Please note that I will not be able to accelerate the performance with a graphics card. I do not have much knowledge on video editing/rendering so please reply without any ‘editing lingo’.I will be using Sony Vegas Pro 11 to edit and render my videos.

  1. What processes are required to create a finalized rendered video (e.g. processing of effects, rendering etc.)
  2. Which of these processes effect you the most?
  3. Which of these processes have to happen quickly in order to quickly create a rendered/ finalized video? (e.g. effects processing, render time etc.)
  4. What hardware component(s) would accelerate such processes most significantly?

Not sure how to answer these questions but it depends on what you're doing. The time you spend on it depends on how long it takes to edit and then render the video. That's pretty much it. As long as you have a fast enough system that lets to smoothly edit and a system that can render everything quickly, it's all good.

How you pick your parts depends on the program you're using. Gpu acceleration for rendering and editing will often be faster than rendering just using the cpu which is why getting a discrete gpu for acceleration would help out quite a bit. Sony Vegas supports OpenCL so it's best to take advantage of this.

Depending on what you're doing, if you have enough power already, gpu acceleration should be the most substantial for editing and rendering. A more powerful cpu, more ram, and a faster drive can be more beneficial than each other depending on the situation.

£300 is a really tight budget and I'd recommend saving up a bit more instead.

If you simply can't do that, my recommendations would be: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1SYSa

Hi there, thanks for the quick reply.

So it's just render time which takes the most amount of time?

Will getting a cheap cpu (a cheap x4 AM3+ AMD chip) and a decent graphics card be worth doing? or will the cpu be needed to edit and actually run the program smoothly?

thanks again!

Rendering is usually the shortest. You usually spends more time editing. The speed of the system doesn't have much to do with this though.

What you need depends on what you're doing.

I am literally only rendering, because its a project i will be comparing the render time on two different computers, one that i've made, one premade (from retailer) which is probably 2x the price.

Well, for one, I don't think your budget can really even allow for a dedicated gpu without cutting some tight corners: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1Z8x4

Please don't worry about the buget, there are cases avaliable for £10 and Power supplies for around the same price, i know they're not great branded qaulity but it is only the hardware speed that makes a difference for me. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1Z8Hn The only thing i havnt bought is the Hard-drive. Thanks again

Well if you can grab a 7770 for that system, you're set.
