i searched the issue, and apparently it has to do with nvidia drivers. Not everyone is successful, but most people are getting around it.

 

Please completely uninstall ALL video drivers that are powering your GPU, the Nvidia driver first, then restart, then the generic nvidia driver that Windows will try to install after the reboot. then restart again. You should now be in a reduced resolution. Try the update again, if the problem persists, then just reinstall your drivers and wait for an official fix :/

Also remember to download the latest 8.1 drivers from Nvidia, as they will offer better support for 8.1.

Have you checked the Microsoft windows compatibility website and also you know there is no upgradeable copy of the os from windows 7 just a full install version

did you check the Microsoft compatibility website for all your hardware & software that might be having problems .  Question ? how did the update  run when you try to install 8.1 and is that the current system that you are running is in your Siegel

Yes that is my current system. Everything went fine until it rebooted and was about to log into windows, then that screen popped up.

try uninstalling  your recon  3d an try with the latest NVidia beta driver make a restore  point and let me know how it goes
