Small form factor ITX rig for around 1100€

Hey guys,

i´m trying to put together a small form factor system for easy transport that is also futureproof for the next 2 to 3 years.

Budget

I plan to spend around 1100€ and i live in germany, so the preferred shop is mindfactory.

I´d like to save money where i can, but i am also willing to pay more if it makes a meaningfull difference for me.

Goal

My goal is to play all kinds of games in 1080p60 for now , but also have a little bit of headroom to eventually jump to 1440p and general futureproofness. That´s why i favor the GTX 1070.

Current System

I´m upgrading from a stock cooled i5 2320, GTX 770, MSI Z77A G43 Gaming, 2TB HDD (which i plan to use in the new build), generic 750W PSU i got basically for free back then, Zalman Tower Case and 8GB DDR3 RAM.

I plan to sell the old machine, so i can´t salvage parts from it.

The Plan

This is what i got so far:

PCPartPicker part list: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/7kWXnn
Price breakdown by merchant: http://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/7kWXnn/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  (€304.43 @ Mindfactory)
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Water 3.0 Performer C + LNC 81.3 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  (€59.44 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Motherboard: ASRock H110M-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard  (€82.29 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  (€89.32 @ Mindfactory)
Storage: Sandisk SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (€65.99 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Video Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Mini Video Card  (€421.64 @ Mindfactory)
Case: Thermaltake Core V1 Mini ITX Tower Case  (€43.89 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Power Supply: Corsair VS 550W ATX Power Supply  (€52.31 @ Mindfactory)
Total: €1119.31
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-11-06 14:05 CET+0100

The prices aren´t really correct, PCPartPicker adds shipping for each items individually somehow (it should be pretty much exactly 1100€ in the end).

Questions

First, i don´t know if the i7 6700 is better than an overclocked i5 6600k. In combination with a fitting motherboard they cost around the same combined. (~360€)

Second, cooling. The Thermaltake Water 3.0 Performance C seems compelling for the price and more efficient in this form factor as i couldn´t find an air cooler with OC potential and a height of max. 140mm yet.

These are my main concerns, RAM and PSU were picked without real reason, so input on those would be nice. Also i think the average SSD i chose should be sufficient.

And for the GTX 1070, i tend to go either for the Zotac Mini or KFA EX OC Sniper, depending on how i fit everything.

I´m open for all kinds of suggestions, so thanks in advance!

for the PSU i would go for the rm550x for reasons

-modular helps on smaller form factors

-80+ gold

-never cheap out on the PSU especially working with high end parts

I like this list as it does not break the bank, thanks! However if you look, at the RAM, amazon says it´s ready to ship in 2 to 4 weeks, idk, seems strange (and also the motherboard only supports 2133s, so the higher clock wouldnt give me anything).

I also saw the comparison on userbenchmark, however most of the i5´s are overclocked up to 4.8ghz. I am not sure if i could pull this of with such a small case and a 120 radiator. So perhaps, comparing against the i7 is better in this scenario?

How about the CX550M or the XFX one herman mcpootis proposed? I really dont want to go over budget, but you are right. Cheap PSUs are probably not worth it. I just thought that nowadays most PSUs would be ok, especially coming from well known brands like Corsair.

dont rate stuff based on brands, rate them from research and reviews. if you are taking a VS with those specs.. you are just basically putting your build in risk. VS are for general purposes and not for high end builds i repeat, not for high end builds

First - Generally speaking the i7-6700 is not worth the extra $100 or so (over an i5) for the 5-10 fps extra you might get in some games. Most games don't use Hyperthreading and those that do, don't get much advantage from it.

Second - unless you get a Z170 based motherboard, you're not going to be overclocking anyway (You can't OC with an H110 motherboard.) So you don't really need anything other than the stock cooler. However, you could get something along the lines of a CM Hyper 101i, or similar.

A CM Hyper T4 should fit in that case and allow mild overclocking.

Overall, in a small ITX case, you shouldn't go for a high OC anyway as cooling and airflow is often restricted. Plus, of course, you'd need a "K" CPU and Z170 motherboard.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

mostly went with that kit for the heatsink and low price. you can go with valueram or a different kit if you want, should be perfectly fine.

i7s would consistently be better than the i5, even if the i5 is overclocked as the extra threads will bring more performance and/or remove stuttering with gtx 1070 perfoming graphics cards.

both are good power supplies, more than good enough for your rig.

Allright, i get that. The thing is, the i5 6600k in combination with an OC motherboard (which would be the obvious choice for it) would cost almost the same as the i7 6700 non K with a cheaper H110 Motherboard. That´s why i am unsure of what to pick. But since i wont really do huge overclocks i will probably choose the i7. However i´m still not sure on cooling, i´d like to go with water for silence and for the sake of watercooling because it sounds and looks kind of cool. :D

i7 it is then, thanks for the video. Somehow i missed it until now.

Seems like my questions are answered, thanks for the support!

An overclocked i5-6600K will outperform a stock clocked i7, if you are looking for max game performance.

That video that people keep linking, clearly shows that the i7 is only 5-10 fps faster than the i5, overall - if you actually watch some of it.

If you just look at the static screen cap in the link, it does look as though the i5 is much slower, but if you watch the video, you'll see that all the fps values vary at different parts of the benchmark runs for all the CPUs. It also shows very little overall difference between any of them - overclocked or not.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.
