Raid Setup Help (Controller & Sata Ports)

I'm going to put 8 Western Digital Red drives into Raid setup(Windows 10 OS). If my motherboard doesn't have enough sata ports. Is their some kind of Raid controller or Pcei Sata card I can buy if so which one should I buy?

Also what Raid setup is best to use, I was thinking of going with Raid 6.

Current Build: Project Frost
Gaming Rig Build: Project Ice Dragon

Raid card are extremely expensive. Also why do you need like 18tb of space if your going with 3tb drives. Also look at the difference between WD red's and WD red pro's.

Motherboard raid uses cpu power especially in something other than a raid 0 or 1.

Are you setting this up as a server or as to your pc?

I work with 4K material and need to store the content somewhere. 4K eats allot of space very quickly.

You would need a raid card that supports as many drives as you want to use. You can't mix and match drives attached to your mob and RAID card for an array.

Software raid has come a LONG way over the last several generations of intel's chipset, and outside of enterprise applications, I would say limit the number of drives and use onboard RAID. it will be much much cheaper.

That being said, if this is a mission critical system and budget is not a concern, I'm sure some others will chime in with specific raid controllers and other advice.

When in doubt, re-format.

Do you need redundancy? Redundancy is not a replacement for back up and therefore might just make your plans more expensive. Redundancy is for non-stop uninterrupted 24/7 operation; so you can hot swap dead drives from a running system.

Use RAID0 with quality drives for your video and buy a large drive for backup. RAID cards are expensive and provide an extra point of failure. You will be better off financially spending your money on larger drives and using RAID0.
