Or quite simply it's early indication of a failing drive?

You can get Seatools and run the Long Generic Test. If it survives, you're good. Try the short test first just to see if it passes or not.

i think im just gonna go buy some new drives (i have one not being recognised by elementry os or win 10)

Hi there :)

As the guys pointed out this may be a strong indication that the drive is on its way to failing so I would strongly recommend backing up your data from it.

Then I'd get a tool from the manufacturer's website and see if the drive passes all diagnostic tests.

Try getting the raw values of the S.M.A.R.T. status with a couple other tools to verify the status of the drive.

Try moving the drive around the case and test it externally to exclude simple resonance with the case as the potential source of those sounds. Sometimes HDDs are not mounted properly and resonate with the case or another part and produce excessive noise.

It's really important to back all your important data up at this point so you don't face data loss issues and data recovery situations.

Thanks @Energycore for mentioning!

WD Blue is a pretty good option for an everyday storage HDD. Let me know if you need more details around this drive.

Most notable difference is warranty.  The black drives tend to have a damn good warranty (5 year) compared to the more normal lengths for the blue drives (2 year).  Also black drives should (used to) have higher capacities available.   I'm guessing some minor internal differences that sets the performance apart?

For what it's worth.  I've had good experiences with HGST drives in the past.  Currently using a pair in RAID 1 for media duties.

I'm thinking of getting a 2tb drive

WD Black drives are designed for performance, more extensive and heavier workloads, multitasking and feature a longer warranty. These drives are recommended for workstations and systems that sustain heavier and longer usage. They have an integrated dual-core CPU that enables the drive to work much better during multitasking.

WD Blue is an everyday storage drive designed for mainstream usage with shorter warranty compared to WD Black but it should also be able to handle pretty much anything you throw at it.

You should be OK with either of them :)

Interesting, I didn't know a CPU inside a hard drive was a thing.

Who manufactures it? Is it proprietary?

Hi :)

Every drive has a processor that manages the caching that it does. WD Black features a dual-core processor that offers twice the processing power to maximize drive performance. This enables WD Black to perform better during extensive and heavier workloads and during multitasking.

I'll check if I can share other details around this and will post back. :)
