Could my GPU be dead ?

Go to solution Solved by Sodium,

Case closed guys. It was my R9 280 that died and was preventing the system from running correctly. Bought a GTX 1050 ti, everything works now.

Hey everyone, i'm new to the forum and i'm here to seek some guidance.

Basically, i had my pc stable for almost 2 years and a half until a few days ago.

I woke up, pressed the power button and nothing happened. The fans would spin for half a second, motherboard lights were on but the computer wouldn't turn on. So, i just checked everything, removed every part of the pc and started over from scratch since i hadn't cleaned it in a while, i applied new thermal compound to the GPU and the CPU and cleaned the fans and whatnot. When i assembled the PC again, everything was working correctly. The computer would turn on flawlessly and i assumed the problem was gone... whatever the problem was.

The next day, i turned the PC on but after it went into my desktop  the PC turned itself off and once again, i had the same problem as the former day. The PC wouldn't turn on.

Out of curiosity, i removed the graphics card out of the case and i noticed that the PC would turn on. Then i placed the graphics card again and the computer booted normally again. I even performed a stress test on the GPU and the CPU after. Everything was working. Strange...

The next day, i turned my pc on, everything working normally. I started playing some CS GO and after 45-1h, my monitor went blank, the computer remained on, but nothing showed on screen. I turned the computer off and now every time i try to boot the computer i get no screen on my monitor and i get the VGA_LED red light on my motherboard always on. Does this mean my GPU died ?  The fans spin but i get no signal on my monitor. Also, i can assure that there were no GPU artifacts.

The computer boots up correctly, i can even navigate to my music folder using my keyboard and sound works ok .. but of course, i don't have signal on my monitor.

Also, i can confirm that i didn't overuse thermal paste.

Side note: I overclocked the GPU but there were no signs of artifacts ever since it was overclocked. CPU was overclocked at 4.5Ghz 1.392v stable.

Could this be a GPU short circuit ?

I also did a paperclip test with my PSU, it turns on normally.

Here's my PC specs:

CPU: AMD FX 8320
GPU: XFX R9 280
MB: ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0
RAM: HyperX Fury 1600Mhz 8GM Ram
PSU: lc power 650w lc6650gp3 v2.3
SSD: Crucial MX200

if it were dead, it wouldnt run at all. I dont wanna sound like a repeat of everyone else but it really could be driver issues. thats usually what happens to me, drivers not working and my screen goes black.

That can happen,in my opinion, for 2 reasons, either the drivers went nuts with some update that messed with your OC,or could be something wrong with the PCB.

I highly doubt it was the GPU's drivers since i've been running on the same drivers for half an year and it hasn't shown signs of malfunction. No BSOD, No artifacts, no stability issues.

My vote is actually to check the power supply. How old is it? Do you have a different one to test with? Do you have another PC to test your GPU in to rule it out, as well, or another GPU to try?

PSU is 2 years old, it's a really cheap one too. it was like 70$. Basically the only part i had to replace on my system was the motherboard that i had previously. it was a MSI 970A-G43 which fried due to not having a heatsink in the VRM's.  I'll have to check if the parts work in another system. Going to take it to a repair shop this monday.

Update, so out of curiosity. today i turn on the PC and the VGA_LED is gone now. DRAM_LED is the one who stays red. I also noted that when i tried placing my hand on my case, it would shock me slightly. Same thing would happen but the shock was more intensive when i touched the back side of the PSU when i plugged the power on. I was scared of possibly damaging other components so i turned off everything . I'm starting to think that it's actually the PSU.

I was going to take my PC to the repair shop today but today was a holiday on my country. I'll go tomorrow and update the thread hopefully.
