My first question. I would like to host servers for many different games, Terraria, Minecraft, Battlefield and all the above. I wonder, NAS or Server? I'm new to the server / NAS scene but have read some articles about them.

What would you recommend? And if you say NAS, I've been looking at different ones that I can buy. My budget is £300 but I can go over by a little.

(All with extra RAM purchased seperately)

I found these very quickly using Googles Shopping section. I'm unsure which is the best out of the above, if anyone can guide me in the correct direction, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Forgot to specify

4GB RAM (Pref 8 but expectations aren't high)
500GB HDD (1TB is better but again, expectations)
GPU (Not really applicable as integrated graphics is fine)
Processor pref. Intel but I suppose AMD is fine. At least 2ghz with 4 cores (Eh, I'll accept 4ghz with 2 cores)
and the rest doesn't really need to be specified.

Built or not.

NAS = network attached storage (which is just a hdd/s drive that network access-backup storage like drive G: )

while

a server is a computer that hosts and runs software that the clients(users) access. eg in a network one computer A(act as server)will host the game while other computers (B,C,D....etc) clients access the game. computer A most powerful

ok I got a few minutes ....

1)is this a lan party sort of thing, all your mates come round with pc's and connect to your pc which hosts the game?

or

2a) WAN sort of thing , were all your mates sit at home and log onto your server that you have rented from some server company usually 1yr contracts

2b) or a server that you have set up in your house

options

1) possible but a nightmare pc's monitors keyboards lots of space

2a) probably best choice and can be done for under £300 per yr

2b) second best but remember your internet connection speed even on fibre mite be strained .

server hosting companys pay a lot off money for special connection speeds not what me and joe get from bt fibre they pay for bandwidth . I don't mean to discourage you from this , why don't you try and host a game on your pc as server and give some friend your ip and access and see where bottlenecks and lags occur in your network.

I have tried hosting a server on my own PC, but have realised that it sometimes causes lag spikes for me, and considering it uses up virtually all of my RAM, it also crashes occasionally. Hence the reason for this.

However, this entire idea can be voided if you could recommend some upgrades to my current computer, which has 8GB RAM, AMD 8 core 3.5ghz CPU, GTX 970 GPU with a standard 600watt PSU.

I have been looking into upgrades, and really really need a new hard drive. However, considering my budget is quiet low, I've not been able to find any upgrades.

What would you suggest I do? Server or PC upgrade?

its hard for me to tell you what u should do , I can only inform. at this moment I am looking at servers on ebay and was going to see if I can find one for you but I should warn you these things sound like your mum has just switched the hoover on , they are that loud(best place for server is outside shed with power). As for spike lags you had that's was your computer at 100% load especially if you was gaming as well. what did your friends say about there connection and game play, any line lag(bt,sky whatever). its definitely worthy of serious thought and research.again I can only inform not advise

I appreciate your input and will most likely wait before buying a server. I am currently renovating my loft which could be used as a server room, but until then, I guess it's not a very good idea. Thank you for everything, I will return to this post when the time comes.
