Hello,

I recently bought a used twin node 1U server off of eBay. Unfortunately, the server did not have IPMI built into them, HOWEVER, they do have a 200pin slot for IPMI AOC-SIMSO+.

I picked up 2 of those IPMI cards and installed them into each server, however, I'm now having some issues.

I installed it into the motherboard of my server, and I booted it up and now it's showing me "IPMI is first powered. System waits for its initialization and will reset once it's complete."

So I go into BIOS, Advanced, and there is a new option called "IPMI". I see this,

“IPMI Specification Version: (unknown)”

“BMC Hardware/Firmware Version: (unknown)”.

I click on "IPMI LAN Configuration", update my IPs, then change "Update LAN Settings" to "Yes", and I save and reset.

Then the server boots back up, and goes back to the message that says, "IPMI is first powered. System waits for its initialization and will reset once it's complete."

It just hangs there for a couple of minutes, then continues booting up. I check BIOS again and the IPs are not there anymore, they're reset back to what they originally were set to when I first installed the card.

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Do I need an OS to fix the issue? Is there something I need to install?

Also, when I installed the cards, my BIOS started being weird, such as telling me no fans were spinning, my temperature was at 255C, which is false. I remove the card and it goes back to normal, and tells me that the temperature is at 29C and all fans are spinning at 10,000rpm.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

There is your motherboard model on this page that seems to have IPMI firmware. I don't have experience with this on supermicro's (at least not directly) so might be on the wrong track here but try updating all firmware first.

Is there firmware on the supermicro site for that model that you will need to run?

Thank you for your response.

I was following this tutorial, http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/other/AOC-SIMSO.pdf . If you skip to page 15, you'll be brought to "Chapter 3 Software Application and Usage". It's telling me to use the program IPMICFG utility to set the "network settings and IP address", is that what I need to do? And do you know how I install it?

Looks like you need to boot to a USB/CD with that utility on it from what they are saying! Not sure what the difference is from setting it in the BIOS as you have already done but worth a try!

Yeah definitely! I don't really get why setting it in BIOS is any different as well.. but well it's worth a shot. I'll give the tool a go and see how it turns out.

Do you have any idea as to why the card messes with my BIOS? In the "Hardware Monitor" section of my servers, it's telling me that the system temperature is running at 255C, and that no fans are running, which is not true.

Possibly something to do with the fact it can't detect any firmware on the module which is odd, which is why I thought trying to update the firmware on the module might help.

Unless it is a faulty module?

I suppose there's a possibility it could be faulty, I'll have to ask the seller about it and see if he can send me a replacement. Funny enough, I bought two of them and both of them do that, so possibly that's just how it is? Not too sure though.

As for the firmware, the motherboard "technically" doesn't have a firmware for IPMI, in the link that you gave me, the motherboard is not listed in there either. I believe Supermicro X7 motherboards do not have IPMI built in, but rather has a 200pin IPMI slot for installing those AOC-SIMSO cards.

I hope running the utility and setting up the IPs work? I'll give it a go and I'll update the thread, I really appreciate your response!

Well I just wanted to give an update.. I just installed an OS and downloaded the IPMICFG utility. I'm following the tutorial for Supermicro, and everytime I run a command for IPMICFG, it just gives me "kcs_error_exit:"

What do I do? The seller told me to update the firmware but I don't even know how since there are like no online tutorials? Could someone help?
