before we start I know this will limit speed from 10gb to 3gb, but its a 1gb network so not really an issue.

back to my question, title says it all, with that work? the reason I ask is I am due to move back in with parents, but want to look into getting my own place, owning this time not renting, would like to wire the house for 1gb networking throughout out and quick rough maths on number of ports needed comes to 20 with file server and smart TVs and such, so was thinking after looking at cat6 patch panels on amazon, 24 ports are £20-25, 48 ports are £30-35 so thought may as well spend the extra £10 for ensure I don't have to change it, (and what would I do with the old one then?) however got worried about wire run lengths for some of the rooms, with possibly being on separate floors, enter the idea of cat6a since that doubles the run length max (right? google said so) but the cat6a panels are at a bare minimum of £150. Can I mix the two and accept I can never do 10gb without a total overhaul? which I don't plan on doing until 10gb isn't well over £1000 to get the hardware.

this is very much an idea at the back of my mind as I need to see how the new job goes and get some savings sorted before this is even a remote possibility.

If it's only going to be a 1gb network, why not just use cat5e? Or perhaps regular cat6? (Not cat6a)

My main concerns with cat6 was run length, didn't even look into cat5e, its my understanding that cat6 maxes out at around 50 metres?
