EDIT:

Might not be the most elegant solution, but it works

Annother method i can recommend is by using 7-Zip encrypted archive, its customizable, saves space and is easy to use

I would also recommend an encrypted archive if you really want to keep prying eyes off of it. 7-ZIp can do it, or any other image software that can create encrypted images.

Going for a more radical way, Windows 10 has a built-in option to encrypt a whole partition of a hard drive. It's called Windows 10 Bitlocker (or something like that...).

Tho I think it only comes default in Pro & Enterprise versions.

Anyway, there are also a lot of options online to encrypt files, both free (with limitations) and paid options.

I just wish they added a few more options for it... Like actually encrypting specific files/directories instead of full partitions.

Yeah that kinda sucks :/ Encryption enthusiasts don't have that many options in the market when it comes down to very specific needs (such as encrypting just one file, or a folder, or a program... or even choosing a specific encryption algorithm!).

I myself am developing an encryption program for passwords and any kind of file; non-commercial scope.

Is there also way that i can somehow encrypt file and use some device ( not password ) like usb to unlock it or use some certificate to decipherment?

Dare I say that in this regard I kinda like how OSX has built-in tools for it....

*hides from the tomatoes being thrown*

In its Disk Utility (similar to Disk Management in Windows) it let's you create password protected images that actually use it as a key for encryption. I use it a lot on my NAS machine.

I agree that, in general, MacOS has more built-in functionalities, but consider that Windows does not need them, since all those functionalities already exist for Windows in the form of some external executable program, but not even half of them exist for Mac, so they need to be preinstalled.

Linux systems on the other hand don't have any of those possibilities (being a penguin sucks in summer)

To be honest, you'd be surprised, for both systems. Of course the sheer quantity of software available for Windows is uncontested, but usually there's still several solid options for anything you want to do in the other OSes, too.

Wasn't trying to debate an OSX vs Windows thing anyway, the fact that I'm using Windows for my personal machine says it all. But as someone that's not a fanbooy of any side and who enjoys variety in software, sometimes I find one thing lacking compared to the other. I kinda wish we had one OS that did it all, heh.

U fuckin' wot, m8?

GnuPG is available on most, if not all, Linux distributions. Perfect for encrypting files.

For encrypting entire volumes, dm-crypt and LUKS have been around for ages and do exactly that.

I deal in shitposts and shitpost accessories.

I meant that linux systems have neither:

  • A lot of preinstalled software (Mac).
  • A lot of available software online (Windows).

Don't get mad saying that there is "plenty of vary software available" on Ubuntu Software Center / Linux Mint Software / blablabla

I myself am a Linux user, and there is an awful loft of software (and even whole software sections) lacking for linux.

I'm not saying you can't use Linux for the average same tasks you'd do on Mac or Windows, but there are specific areas of software (game engines, for example) with little to no existing programs.

Sorry for being late, just logged in back into the page today. You should be able to easily do that by changing the input stream type to password instead of text, just as most webpages do it in their "password" field.
