Should I trade out my 980ti?

NeXTSalt

So I love my main rig but my problem is that I can't go around with it due to its size. I plan on using a on the go computer by july next summer. As of right now just in terms of extra parts going towards it is a MSI B150 Mortar Arctic, 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX White (2x16) 3200MHz and a reference GTX 980ti. The thing is that my friend is making a new build and offered a old alienware alpha he has just for my GTX 980ti.

I am asking if I should accept his offer or not.

What the trade will be:

What I would give:

Reference GTX 980ti (used for about a year)

Alienware Alpha

Specs:

I7-4765T 2.00GHz

16GB DDR3

GTX 860m

500GB SSD

would reccomend you build a minit itx build using spare parts or a last gen cpu (from your old rig) with your 980 ti it will easily beat out the 860m no prob and a desktop i5 can get equivilant power just salvage a bunch of parts from your old rig and make a mini it x 1 but you will need a new case or even mobo tho

Well yeah on the go is like a small(ish) lan rig probably would be a air 240 max using the 980ti, ram and mobo lying around and spend around $800-$1000 for the rest of the parts is what I had in mind if I am to not trade it out

I don't know yet, I set a goal to decide in 2 weeks and I do have conflicting thoughts as like to help my friend by trading it so he can use the 980ti for his mitx rig and just deal with a alienware alpha as a on the go PC or to decline and get a matx white themed build featuring my GTX 980ti. Even if I did end up trading it I do still have the thought of making a white themed build. Do you know how the GTX 770 holds up in today's games? I do have a reference model lying around not doing anything as of right now.

a 770 = 960=1050

trade that out for the alienware alpha lol

but seriously just spend a few hundred and get sum fast hardware (#gottagofast)

mainly because going down to a alienware alpha from u=your rig would be bad

I did have a bad past experience with Alienware before lol I got a ivy bridge gt 650m laptop back in 2012 and fried itself a couple months ago. Let alone performance was ass to begin with lol.

maybe if I want to keep a somewhat powerful standpoint when I am away from my monstrosity of my main desktop should I just pick up another GTX 1080 and shove that into a small build?

a 980ti  and 1080  are quite similar in 4k and 1440p and 1080 is a little bit better in 1080 would not recommend you spend like 600 usd just for like 6 more fps

True, also what threw me off a bit is the 4765t that is on friends Alienware as far as benchmarks go. As what I saw that super low clock of 2ghz seemed to really perform only around a i5-3570k at stock as far as I saw for now.

also as far as GTX 1080 performance, I think it's a bit better than 6 FPS boost from the 980ti from what I tested, well then again my testing might be more off since I was using 980ti's in SLI compared to 2 1080's in SLI.

Not even close. A 1080 beats a maxwell titan x. Ask me how I know

a 1080 is made for 4K. 980/980 Ti SLI is what you would need for actual 4K

Ok then what's your opinion, should I keep my 980ti for a mini on the go PC or trade it out for my friend and just buy like a GTX 1080, 1070 with a aftermarket cooler (like EVGA's ACX 3.0 type line cards) for a white themed build (or I can even go as low as reusing my reference GTX 770 xD

All depends on how much you have/want to spend. If you have the money for it (which I'm assuming you do since you're even talking about it) I would go 1070 with an i5 or i7 or the likes. Especially since on the gonmonitors usually aren't 4K lol
