Friends pc upgrade

maxime_vhw

So my friend has a HP Pavilion Elite HPE-025be and he is looking to upgrade it.

So i was thinking new motherboard, cpu (+cooler), gpu and maybe a new psu (current psu has 460w).

So we would be reusing the case, ram (has 8gb ddr3 does that work with that mobo? is ddr4 backwards compatible), and harddrive.

This is what i got so far:

mobo: ASRock H110M-HDS  ASUS H170M-PLUS

cpu: i5 6600K i5-6500

Ram: 8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 WINDFORCE OC 6G

not a h mobo with k cpu. z170 mobo and 6600k + 1070 should be good. 212 evo cooler or deepcool gammaxx 400

Well i picked a h mobo because its way cheaper then a z mobo. I could also take a 6600 non K. But i really dont know his budget. He just told me to configure a upgrade for his pc. Maybe i should go Z mobo + 6600K, ill ask about his budget.

6600 non k will bottleneck a 1070

6600k will be a waste of money without a Z series mobo. The build overall seems a bit overkill, please tell us what he needs the system to do so adjustments can be made to save money.

He told me he wants to be able to game on decent settings (high, ultra).

His current cpu (i5 750) will bottleneck a GTX1070.

Overkill? i5 and 1070?

No, DDR4 is not backwards compatible (288pin vs 240pin ddr3).  Honestly, you may as well spring for the case if you're going to go that far.  Depending on the size of the case, you may run into problems with fitting the graphics card and/or the cpu cooler.  Honestly, My biggest concern would be airflow.  pre built cases  aren't really known for having good airflow, so you might struggle to keep your temps down, especially for the GPU.  Unless you get a reference card with a blower-style cooler.

So his old ddr3 wont fit in this mobo ?

Ill tell him he should consider a full build. (he can save his harddrives thats about it i think.

Nothing is overkill if your budget doesn't matter. You don't need a 1080 for 1080p gaming.

16GB of ram is not needed for gaming orientated build. I would drop the 650W PSU and get a higher quality lower watt PSU. The CX-M series isn't known for the best reliability.

Can you recommend a psu? Wouldnt you go 650w just to be future/expand-ability proof?

I'm not from the Netherlands but I used that website to find a better quality one for a bit more. 550W is enough for now and for the foreseeable future. It costs 10 euros more than the one you picked but it is higher quality and it's fully modular.

That latest build looks fine. It's just a matter of how much you want to spend. But, a Corsair CX550M would save you some money. A "gold" rated power supply is only needed if you intend to do a max overclock (and want the stability, etc) or power rates are very high where you are.

If you want to spend less, you could go back to your original idea and just upgrade the HP.

Use an i5-4670 or 4690 with stock cooler

Get a B85 (or h97) mATX motherboard.

Re-use the 8Gigs of DDR3

re-use the case and power supply

Get a GTX-1060 or RX 470 - they are all you need for 1080p gaming.

- or -

i5-6500 with stock cooler

B150 or H170  mATX motherboard

8Gigs (2x4) of DDR4-2133

GTX-1060 or RX 470

re-use case and power supply.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

i5-6600, 16Gigs, ITX Corsair 250D, R9 390, 120Gig M.2 boot, 500Gig SATA SSD, no HDD

I found a H170 that has DDR3 so is this a good upgrade?

H170 mATX mobo

i5 6500

reuse 8gb ram

gtx1060

reuse psu

The Corsair CX-M (Grey Label) is perfectly fine.

Yes, but.

Skylake CPUs are mainly designed to use DDR4 RAM, but they can also use DDR3L. It's the "L" part that can cause problems. If your DDR3 RAM is older 1.65/1.75v instead of the newer 1.5v or 1.35v (L), you may have problems.

In most cases 1.5v RAM seems to work fine with Skylake chips.

Btw, the Haswell chips (i5-4690, etc) are designed to use 1.5v RAM, but 1.65v RAM seems to work.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

As wattage goes up on the CXM series reliability goes down. I recommended the one one I did because it is higher quality and fully modular for the same price.

i have no idea what ram(voltage) is in his current pc all i know is that ist ddr3 PC3-10600 MB/sec

Here's a link to the specs(sorry page might be in dutch, dont know if it will translate):

Given that it's an older i5-750 system, the RAM is probably 1.65volts. It may specify on the RAM's label, but if it doesn't, it's probably 1.65v

I, personally, would not try to use that with a Skylake CPU.

Also, I notice that the original RAM is DDR3-1066 or DDR3-1333. The CPUs - both Haswell an Skylake - are design to use DDR3-1600. The RAM may have difficulty running at 1600 speed if the motherboard can't run it at 1066 or 1333.

It might not be a problem if you go for the Haswell CPU + mobo, but if it doesn't work with the Skylake, and you need new RAM, it would be a shame not to use DDR4.

If cost becomes a real factor, you could get an i3-6100 (which is still faster than an i5-750) and 8Gigs of DDR4-2133.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

So now with a ddr4 mobo + ram

mobo: ASUS H170M-PLUS

cpu: i5-6500 (incl cooler)

ram: 8Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX ( DDR4 - 2133 MHz / PC4-17066 - CL13)

gpu: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 WINDFORCE OC 6G

psu: SeaSonic M12II EVO 520 Bronze

Toughts?
