Posted October 4, 2016 Hi everyone, I'm looking to consolidate two LGA1155 systems (HTPC and Home Office PC) into one LGA2011 (X79) system, and I'm wondering what CPU to get for it. This systems will be used for 1. NAS/Plex Server 2. Home Office PC 3. Kids' PC (Mostly internet browsing and internet explorer games like Kizi.com, and maybe rocket league on steam) 4. Streaming PC when I game (iracing) 5. Occasional photoshop, video editing for youtube, and photo editing I have been planning on getting an E5-2670 from ebay for around $70 for its 8 cores and good price. I'm just wondering if there's a case for a higher clocked cpu since this is only clocked at 2.6GHz. I could go with higher clock and lower core count like the I7-3930K, or go with the I7-4930K for PCIe Revision3. I could also look for the E5-1650 (Xeon equivalent of the 3930K) for possibly better price. Since these are more expensive, might also just go for the E5-2690 to retain the 8 cores and gain slightly higher clocks. Heat is a factor I should also consider (I'll be using a HR-02 Macho). The system would need to be on almost all the time because I use Plex to stream local digital TV to my Roku3 (primary living room TV), using a HDHomerun Connect. I don't have a motherboard yet because I was hoping to get them both at the same time. Because of the price of X79 motherboards, I'd really rather stick with the E5-2670, but just wondering if the lower clock will be an issue. If a case is made, I'll just need to save up for a bit to get whichever is suggested. Posted October 5, 2016 Author Thanks for the votes guys, but no one is giving reasons or arguments for their suggestions. I checked out passmark scores for these cpu's as its what's suggested to determine performance in plex, and the E5-2670 still looks better there. Here are the scores. Posted October 5, 2016 E5-1650 and (v2) are unlocked... so same as the 4930k if you can find one cheaper. But for what you are doing any of them will work so if you can find something for $80 bucks you might just let cost be the deciding factor. GL with whatever you do.
