Will New Switch Affect QoS Prioritization?

Go to solution Solved by Eniqmatic,

It shouldn't no, because your router is doing the QoS, your switch will have nothing to do with that.

Hey,

I'm building a new PC.  Once completed, I'll need to divide the ethernet connection from my router (in another room) between my new PC and my XBONE, using a switch.  Right now, I have DD-WRT prioritizing my XBONE over all other devices, by using MAC addresses.  I plan to prioritize the XBONE over my new PC, too (using its' MAC).

My question is: Will having an unmanaged switch affect the QoS at all?  Or will the router still prioritize the same way, as if the switch isn't even there?  I'm concerned about hiccups/lag while gaming.

This is the switch I'm going to get.  I think.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122005&ignorebbr=1

Thanks for reading!

It could affect things on the switch itself, but overall, no, it shouldn't have an issue. The only thing I could think of is congestion on the switch itself, but yeah no, the QoS itself should still function correctly.

Can you draw us a network map of each device and how it connects?

Yep as above, depends on the setup, but I am assuming you just have a single router setup at the moment, and  you plan to add an unmanaged switch behind it.

By the way, if you can stretch to it, the GS108 will get you gigabit performance and is a great little switch.

Here would be the proposed network (New PC and XBONE are the only things using ethernet):

DSL Modem to

Router to

4 Port Switch to

Ethernet Connections:

-New PC

-XBONE

Wireless Connections:

-Two Laptops

-Four Phones

-One TV

By 'behind', you mean connecting the switch to one of the router's ethernet ports, right?  That's what I'm doing.

Hmm... I'll think about it, but I really just want something small.  Too much clutter in my room!

BTW, if anyone is in the market for a switch, today is the last day for Netgear rebates at NewEgg and other retailers.  $10/$20/$30 back
