"Previous Overclocking failed" Limiting my overclock!

Go to solution Solved by Zakattacks,

Ah. I just found out my motherboard is somehow limiting me. I can clock the CPU on lower voltages to 4.2GHz on another motherboard. Time to switch!

Hello,

I am a low budget gamer, so I have some older (~2-4 year old) hardware that I got used. I am trying to overclock my CPU but my motherboard only lets me get to a specific point before it spews out a "Warning!!! Previous Overclocking Failed" message. This is really starting to frustrate me because I need 4ghz out of this CPU for the games I play.

Here is everything you need to know about my system:

- My temperatures are stable. The hottest part of my PC is one of the hard drives (at 65c)

- Everything that is overclocked usually runs pretty stable

- Sufficient case cooling (4x60mm fans and one 200-ish mm fan)- EVGA 500w W1

- Coolermaster Hyper T4 w/stock fan

- 8gb Kingston HyperX Fury (clocked to 1333mhz-- more on that later)

-AMD Phenom II x4 b95 (Stock was 3.0ghz)

- XFX AMD r7 360 (single fan version, OC'd to 1100mhz)

-MSI 970A-G43 Motherboard

My problem in detail is this: I can only clock my cpu to 3.55ghz before triggering the message. If I take the Frequency past 237 (with the multiplier maxed out at 15), the message pops up when I try to boot. The weird thing is that my cpu is very stable at 3.55ghz, so why would the bios do this? I just cleared my CMOS and re-updated the bios and no luck.

The other strange this is that on other motherboards, after the overclock fails they go back to stock speeds. My mobo just keeps it (see pictures).

You may need to start bumping up the voltage. Also the RAM speed may be edging close to an unstable point (i.e.,  try using a slower speed profile)

I posted a pic of my voltages. I have the voltage up to 1.65v (which is what I read was the upper end of what the phenom B95 can handle) and the NB and CPU NB up to 1.3v. Do I need to change any other voltages?

Also I have 1866mhz RAM but it is currently clocked at 1333mhz (which is reportedly the fastest that the phenom can handle)

You will have trouble if your mobo/processer does not have an unlocked multiplier which i think is the case.. I can only get around 230 on the freq. Temps i beleive should be around 65 max, 62 reccomened max.. much more can often cause problems quickly. In mycase anything remotly close to 70c is bsod..
