Motherboard for overclocking

Do i need a z170 chipset to overclock a 6700k? Why do people say you need to spend X amount of money in order to get high over clocks? How the hell am I supposed to know how well a board will overclock based on just its price?

Asus Z170-A ATX a good option for max overclocks on 6700k?

You need Z chipset to overclock. If you want a very good overclock get the Asus Z170-A/Pro Gaming and if you want the absolute max overclock (0.2GHz more at best) get the Maximus VIII Hero.

Corsair H110i GT

Asus ROG Strix X99 Gaming

Corsair Vengeance LPX (4x4GB) 3200MHz

Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

I'd rather go with Gigabyte than asus
G1 Gaming is amazing

The ASUS BIOS has a lot more OC options than any other. It has almost double of them (I personally have an ASUS motherboard and tried/seen Gigabyte's ones)

DESKTOP PC - CPU-Z VALIDi5 4690K @ 4.70 GHz | 47 X 100.2 MHz | ASUS Z97 Pro Gamer | Enermax Liqmax II 240mm | EVGA GTX 1070Ti OC'd

I just need a motherboard that will reach max overclocks and wont fry with max overclocks. This video got me confused on how to choose a motherboard for overclocking. He basically said some motherbaords are designed to overclock while others arent. I need to know how to tell what motherboards are designed for overclocking

Check for the CPU Power phase design first, then of course for the motherboard and brand reliability. For the PPD, 8+1 is recommended, 8+2 is "better", 4+1 is just not enough

All motherboards with a chipset with Z on it's name (like Z97 and Z170) are designed for overclocking and officially support it. There are entry level Z motherboards which officially support overclocking, but won't give you very high overclocks. If you want a very good overclock get Asus Z170-A or Asus Z170 Pro Gaming. For the absolute best overclock get Asus Maximus VIII Hero. I myself have an Z170 Pro Gaming and was able to overclock my i5 6600k from 3.5 GHz to 4.6GHz thats a 31% overclock which in my opinion is very very good.

Yes Gigabyte and Asus are the top motherboard brands and both have very good quality, but Asus are known for their better BIOS.

I would rather use an MSI Gaming Z170A motherboard its the bang for your your buck man, and it's not that costly than other's it more stable for overclocking if you are a beginner.

Jay said that the krait sli 970 boards where getting fried because they wherent mean for overclocking. So are 970 chipsets not good for OC?

970 chipsets are meant to be used for AMD AM3 socket. You can't find a 970 chipset in a motherboard with intel CPU. And yes they are not meant for overclocking. 990X and 990FX are meant for overclocking and officially support it, but you need a Z170 chipset for that i7 6700K.
