Should I upgrade?

IridiumAxle

Hello everyone! I was wondering what I should upgrade my computer hardware to based off of my needs. I make videos on youtube specifically for gaming, and I have a sharp 480 USD budget.

My current specs are:

i5 6500

r7 250 (I know, it's disgusting)

16gb ram

and that is really the relevant stuff.

My computer has been starting to lag as my main series is on HEAVILY (150+ mods) modded minecraft and my frames drop drastically at my base due to cpu usage mostly but I can't help but suspect my gpu also...

So I need to know should I upgrade to an i5 6600k and an rx 480 8gb or stick with my current cpu and have a more drastic gpu upgrade (ie. gtx 1070)

No opinion is wrong unless it suggests getting a 24 core xeon. Thanks for the help!

Chuck an RX 480 in there and it'll run great. I've got the Asus Strix 8gb model and it's a buttery smooth dream.

Just make sure your PSU will support it.

I won't know you're talking to me unless you reply/quote me.

I've got a 500w psu, that should do me fine. My trouble is just that it's confusing for the problem to be in the gpu when the cpu usage is what is being driven up. I don't know how to find the root cause of the problem

500w is totally fine. I've only got a 450 in mine and it's no issue.

What're the specs on your CPU exactly? Have you tried overclocking?

Minecraft is primarily CPU intensive but a GPU upgrade should help with the mods.

Maybe a i7 6700 + RX 470/480 combo?

I have not, however I have never attempted it and don't know how to go about it. It's a quad core 3.2ghz

Half stupid question but for your heavy modded minecraft you have optifine in there too I'm guessing? that's literally the best thing for MC frames, because its so poorly optimized it will chug on nearly any CPU with enough mods

Yeah, I have optifine and fastcraft, so it is optimized fairly well. I have just gotten to the point where with the mods I have, almost everything I make is a tile entity that takes more power to run.

Yeah then only hope is dialing back or getting a better CPU, but dont know how much you will really see out of a 6600K. Still only 4 threads and slight bump in clocks

I would suggest the i7 6700K just for the hyperthreading and even higher clock than the i5, still rolls in around 300-350 USD if you wanna upgrade your CPU (it will also help with encoding and other things since you do the tube of you)

Possibly stupid question but, if the gpu has things to do it can't accomplish, is it possible the cpu would try and pick up the slack?
