What is the difference between The desktop and notebook version of GTX 950?

950 is GM206
950M is actually GM107 - a 750 Ti rebrand with GDDR3 memory - it's a fair bit slower - probably around 50% slower

Yep. M cards are mobile cards made for mobile systems. There power consumption and thermals are an big thing. As such those parts perform less then their desktop variants to adjust for the manufactors specs and desire. In the last couple of gens performance compared has gotten better, and it's now even possible to fit actual desktop grade stuff in laptops. But this still has an pricetag, and the thermal ouput remains something that has to be focussed on heavily still. But the new current gen cards are an good step forward for this scenario.

The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.

The current gen cards resulted in massive overheating issues in a LOT of laptops - it is a huge step backwards.

Maybe we have seen different results then :)
