over the past two days I have had two video cards do the exact same thing. Under normal use both have been running then the computer crashes. reboot leads to lines going horizontal on the display. sometimes on reboot before windows logo there is a screen that comes after bios with a bunch of the number "4" on it. both cards were running just fine before. one being a gtx 660 and the other a 780 that my friend gave me with the 660 started doing this. he had no problems with this before giving me the 780.

ram test shows no problems according to memtest, cpu is fine under load being a 4790k. I have tried both pci slots and both times same things happens. installing the drivers again fixes it but then under 5 min is back at it. I do not know how to proceed. thoughts?

Are you trying to run sli because that will be your problem, the cards are not the same so will not be compatible.

I did already try the drives. it worked but came back after 5 min. bios is most current version. this has only started in the past two days of the 660 failing to getting the 780.

I am sure. I have tried multiple cables. the power supply is a RM850

that might be the case but if the powersupply isnt sending power through the cables in the first place then it wont matter if you try different cables. my suggestion is that you take the cards to your friends and then test them in his pc to see if its just your pc doing it

well it seems that they are fried. both of them. seems very strange if any for it to happen to two cards within two days of each other.

Only thing i can think of then is that your motherboard pcie slot is overvolting the cards or the power supply is, either way they are dead but i would have a professional put a multimeter in your power supply pins and your pcie lane pins
