So, a buddy of mine is building his first computer, and he has bought a super-clocked 1060 ( http://goo.gl/odxpnu ). He's ask me to house it in my system just to test it out. Thing is, I'm only seeing performance improve in 1 or 2 games compared to my 970 ( http://goo.gl/EjYD7B ). I was wondering if they were just that close in performance (they aren't though), or maybe something is wrong. I would use Skyrim and Fallout 4 as examples, but we all know performance issues are because of Bethesda's tired engine.

Also, his 1060 is outrageously loud, but I'm gonna count that toward the one fan and its tiny heatsink.

Nah they are pretty close in performance. The GTX 1060 sits somewhere between the 970 and the 980, the latter only being about 15% faster than a 970.

You can fix the fan noise by tweaking the fan speed with MSI Afterburner or a similar program, and as long as temps don't go over 80C you will not be in trouble.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Alright, thanks! That's kind of what I expected. and there isn't a thermal issue, trust me. That 1060 is cold as ice...metaphorically.

1060 is close to 980... something is up!! Maybe it is overheating or thermal throttling? Could also be a driver issue.

I don't really think it's either of those, I had an idea of what was up, I just wanted some extra feedback, and Energycore confirmed my thoughts.

Yeah I've seen manufacturers attempt to one up themselves to see who has the coolest running GPUs even though there is no difference between 50C and 80C (but well cooled VRMs are very important, maybe more so than the GPU itself because power delivery capacitors have a limited lifetime and they age faster at higher temps)

Mhmm. I know that, and you know that, but that doesn't mean I don't get nervous when my temp starts to approach 70C! Haha.

You need not xD

Running my GPU at min fans up to 75 degrees. Keep in mind faster spinning fans also age faster compared to having them spin slower. And since cooling fans (say the ones on your CPU cooler or case) don't lose value like silicon does, I would care about them more than about getting 6 more months out of a GPU that will become outdated in 2 years :)

But 70C is a very safe temp keeping power delivery components and memory chips in mind. No need to panic ;)

Yes I emote a lot. Something about the internet not letting me convey tone or gestures doesn't feel right
