VRAM

Go to solution Solved by Sotti,

Hi there,

3Gb of VRam is the very minimum for 1440p today if you want to max out the top games.

I own 1440p monitors and 780's Superclocked. Max Payne 3 and Crysis 3 are above 2.5 GB of VRam. Max Payne is using 2.9 GB of my card and is a 2012 game.

Even AC3 is peaking 2.3gb of VRam on max specs.

So, I feel 4gb of VRam will be minimum for 1440p gaming at top settings in 2014 top games.

I am really not sure if people who talks about VRam needs actually have tested it personally.

Bye guys

I want to buy a new card but I have a 1440p monitor. My 670 was enough for BF3 but I want to upgrade for BF4. I am more concered with VRAM than whether or not a 290x will have 2 more fps than a 780. And yes I understand that 290x is not out yet. Again think VRAM. I feel that with new consoles we might see games with high res texture packs more often and with games like Watch Dogs claiming high sys req for high res I feel that there might be a big jump in VRAM requirements.

For now it's enough, but seeing the rate at which the demand for VRAM is growing, I doubt it will in 2 years.

2 years ? no.

but for something like skyrim fully modded... it comes close. 8k textures for example would fill it. and 8k is bound to come, since higher resolutions are getting mainstream ( right now especially 2.5k )

4k skyrim mod textures are normal for in mods for instance

I think 3Gb is enough.

Video memory usage increases as you crank up the anti-aliasing, and you really don't need to crank it up that much at high resolutions like 1440p

the general consensus for a like time was 512mb-1366x768(1MP), 1gb (in some cases a 896mb)-1080p (2.07MP), then we started seeing games using 1.2gb of vram if everything is maxed.
considering 1440p (3.68mp) is just under 2x1080p id say 3gb should be fine for a while. that said consoles are now coming with 8gb ofram so we will see slow incrimants, but by the time you NEED 3gb of vram that graphics card will probably be too weak to get respectable frame rates anyway, bit like when you see a 2gb 6450....

so dont worry about it. get on bf4 put it on ultra and measure the usage with msi afterburner
