I've got an fx-9590 sitting around gathering dust. Thinking of gifting it to a family member as a dedicated minecraft server ect. I know 9590's run hot and draw alot of wattage, so what sort of gpu/psu/cooler should I get to compliment it in this task?

CPU: I7 6700K 4.4Ghz @ 1.29v | GPU: MSI Gaming X 1070 8GB | MOBO: Gigabyte z170x Gaming 3 | RAM: 16GB 2800Mhz DDR4 Kingston HyperX

SSD's: 240GB + 500GB SSDs | PSU: Corsair CS 550M | COOLER: Be Quiet Silent Loop 240 | CASE: Corsair 400C

For a minecraft server you wouldn't need much of a GPU, so anything would do....and since there wouldn't be a heavy power draw GPU, basically any half-decent PSU would be fine. With that said, it would be cheaper in the long run to buy a new CPU+motherboard than to run an FX9590 24/7 (if he plans on doing it for an extended period of time).

An FX9590+750Ti (or basically any other GPU) would draw a lot more power than an i3/i5 and integrated graphics (and basically every additional watt of power equates to $1.30~ per year in electricity during 24/7 operation).

A good 600w + PSU from the Tier 1 or Tier 2 list of the thread linked in my signature should suffice. I would say an RX470 or RX480 would work just fine for running a minecraft server. As for cooling, You will likely want to go liquid so the bigger the better. If the case can fit a 360mm radiator, then I would go with a EK Predator 360. If it can fit a 280, get a Kraken X61. If a 240mm, then the EK Predator 240.

the corsair h100i v2 works VERY well for mine. i also use a Sapphire radeon r9 290 Vapor-X 4gb OC gpu, and she still runs top notch.

Why would he need such a powerful GPU for a minecraft server?

It's cheaper to just go Intel than spend all that money on a (cheap) gpu for video output + a high end cooler + electricty costs (and that's assuming he already has a capable motherboard).

Yeah my friend made the same point about cost of operation. Would a dual or quad core i3/i5 be as viable as an 8 core 9590 though?

  1. How big of a server does he want to run?
  2. Does electricity cost technically matter to him (if he lives with his parents, than less electricity might save his parents money but not him and so buying a new platform would end up costing him money -- unless his parents paid for that too)?
  3. What parts do you/he already have (be specific)?
