how about looking into InputDirector or Microsoft's Mouse Without Border, both of which are free.

It allows you to control your second system, with your main system keyboard and mouse, and you can copy/paste text between system as well. Input director allows file transfer, but on a folder that is network shared.

(I suggest to make your desktop shared if you do this), and has more options. But Mouse Without Boarders is easier to setup, and get started.

Both work with Windows 2000 and up.

Look at Synergy, which is much less good, but works with Linux and Mac, as well as Windows.

Unfortunately I need it to be compatible with Linux and Windows, I've looked into software KVMs a little bit but I was unsure whether or not it was the best application for me. Will Synergy do these below listed things?

Can I use it with a single monitor?

What about audio(not a huge deal)?

Does it work with a virtual machine?

***EDIT***

I realized that I can have my main machine as digital DVI and the Linux on analog VGA, if that helps with the first problem.

The Linux system doesn't need to have good graphics, just something that i can work with and if all I need to do is smash a button on my monitor I'll be happy

you've got it.

If you want to pass audio from Linux to your main machine, just connect a wire from your headphone/speaker plug of the Linux system, to the Line In (not Mic) or your main PC. Now any sound from Linux, will come out from your PC speakers/headphones which are connected to your main PC.

Virtual Machine runs on Linux/Windows, so it will be like using any program. So yes it will work on those.
