This is a first time PC build and I just need some guidance. I'm coming from a long period of playing on an xbox, so even if someone recommends me a potato it will still be better then what I've got. The GTX 1060 looks good for me, however I have no idea when it comes to CPU, ram (I would like DDR4), motherboard, power supply or whether I should spend a bit extra for a better 1060 or not. I would also like it be maybe a small build, IDK I just don't want it to look like it can run crisis on ultra at 4k (internal looks really don't bother me), I don't mind picking out a case but if you have any ideas for a simple small form factor one, that would be great.

Notes:

-For 1080p gaming on mainstream games

-Will definitely not be used for content creation

-I don't have a budget but I would describe the amount of money I want to spend it on as reasonable.

-I would love it to be quite quiet, but I don't want to sacrifice performance for acoustics.

Hope that all makes sense.

Cheers

Hi and welcome!

just a few comments on what you should be considering.

  1. The 1060 is really for 1080p and not 4k, it can also do 1440p with today's games.
  2. You have to set a budget for the build or you can run into an issue of getting the wrong components or extra things you don't need or want.
  3. Regarding CPUs, get a K sku CPU if you know/want/plan to overclock it  and if you do get a K sku CPU then you will need a overclocking motherboard to access the overclocking potential of the CPU, if you don't want to overclock then that is fine too and you can get a non-K sku CPU and a non-overclocking motherboard which will cost less.
  4. Do you plan to do a SLI build? This will dictate the motherboard/PSU/case size.
  5. Do you want to watercool the system? this is also a factor that dictates the case size and while i am not saying you can't get an AIO watercooler in a very small case, it is just something to consider as you can have custom and AIO watercoolers.
  6. Do you plan to game at 144hz or just 60hz? 144hz is a great choice for gaming but costs more than a 60hz monitor, do you even plan on getting a new monitor? IDK, again things to consider.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

1. 1080p is fine for me

2. Around 700 to 800

3. Non CPU overclocking

4. No SLI

5. Air only

6. Start at 1080p max, then lower until I get 60fps. My monitor does 60hz so I'm cool with that.

16gb seems a lot for what I'd be doing, what about 2x4gb?

Yes, and read in your Mainboard Manual which slots are to use first. Normaly its 2 and 4.
