Z170A PC MATE - I7 6700 Non-K - Problems overclocking - BCLK does no difference -

Hey guys,

Hopefully some of you guys know whats needed to fix this. Its really frustrating.

This is what I have..

I7 6700 Non K, 3,4ghz
MSI Z170A PC Mate -
MSI Nvidia 1070 MSI
HyperX 16gb x 2 DDR4 Kingston HyperX
POWER SUPPLY 750W COIRSAIR, brand new.

I flashed my BIOS to - MSI Z170A PC Mate Non-K OC BIOS. This bios version gives me the capability to OC this cpu.

I followed this guide... http://overclocking.guide/updated-msi-z170-non-k-overclocking-guide-new-bios/

I did the following

Enter the BIOS
Go to OC on the left
Set OC Explore Mode to Expert
Set Beta Runner to NOC (this is the option to enable non-K OC!))
Change the CPU Base Clock (BCLK) to 130
Set the Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) to Enabled
Adjust the DRAM Frequency to a value around 2600 MHz
Set the CPU Core Voltage to 1.325

Everything else was the same in bios.

The result using CPUZ and SPECCY shows that under stress it maxes 3,4ghz. I have changed the BCLK up, down, theirs NO difference. 3,4ghz is the result or the pc simply does not start because the bclk was to high. Also CPUZ shows bus speed at 99,80, and EVEN if i changed them to 110, 130 and many other values, it never changes.

Here are 2 screenshots of my bios settings -

14114094_10157347854875076_1903929442_o.

I have to add that WHEN i click the OC genie 4 (which is the already set OC that comes with the motherboard), it overcloks to 3,7ghz.
__________________________

So the question i am having is, wtf?. I know that I am saving the settings before exiting and stress testing with two different programs, and reading the stress testing with 2 programs.

What am I doing wrong?

I am running windows 10 btw.

Thank you anyone that can help me out here.

Are you sure that you have the corect BIOS update? I know that after a certian update it won't OC correctly

I just checked, and double checked. Its 100% correct.

Got it from here - http://overclocking.guide/download/msi-z170a-pc-mate-non-k-oc-bios-2/

I got Msi Z170A PC MATE. The bios version i got enables tweaking for OC. Everyone is doing it according to the Internet, seen many succeding.

Does it post first time when you apply the oc?

@Jumper118, it restarts twice when I tweak the CPU.

Here are some more tests ive done. And it seems like the RAM and VGA are causing problems?

Step by step.
I set Genie 4 ON.
I set beta runner ON
I tweaked CPU base clock to 125
Note that Cpu Core Voltage cant be changed in while genie is on function is on.

Pictures-

http://www.overclock.net/content/type/61/id/2859821

RESULTS:

PC booted and 2 seconds later it restarted and booted on it self again. First restart showed  red on RAM, 2nd restart showing red lights on VGA, EZ Debug Led on motherboard. It than froze on Windows loading screen.

2nd Try
I reset PC and tried this. Since the voltage was not possible to change while OC Genie was enabled, I HAD to turn it off.

Turning it off changes the settings displayed abit, ill show with screens.

Step by step
Turned OC Genie OFF.
Beta Runner disabled.
CPU ratio at max 34. <- If i try to change this to something higher its goes to "Auto" on it self.
EIST Disabled, tho Inter Turbo Boost cant be disabled with beta runner disabled.
CPU Base Clock 125
Voltage 1.350

This time PC booted, and again restarted once after only running 2-3 seconds, but this time it went through Windows screen and started up normally after that. Tho the same red lights on both restarts as previous oc.
As you see above, CPU-Z shows 3,4ghz, and the bus speed still at 99,76mhz, even tho I changed it to 125.

In conclusion, changing any setting in OC Genie 4 while its ON is not possible due to voltage is not possible to alternate.

Third Try

I did the EXACT same settings as above, ONLY this time I changed the Beta Runner to enabled. NOTE that enabling beta runner automatically disables Turbo and EIST.
Results: Pc restarted twice as usual. First start was with a red light on EZ Debug Led RAM, after the restart the red light disappeared on VRAM and VGA red light turned on instead. The same as above.

I got into the PC windows, and CPU-Z shows the exact same thing as previous test. 3,391.7MHz, 34multiplier and 99,76Mhz.

4th try

I turned onOC  Genie and let it run as it always have just to test out the red lights dillemma. It still restarted twice and same lights went off. The CPU-Z shows approx 4ghz, and multiplier 39, also buspeed 99mhz. Tho these settings are OC Genie ON. Could the RAM be causing this problem? And why would the RAM light  error disappear after restarting it self and instead VGA turn red? There are aboslutely no problems while in windows tho. Also both the card and ram are brand new. So is the cpu.

Gonna try some more tests and post here. Thank you for anyone taking the time to help me out with this.

Regards Bill-

If it's restarting twice then it's probably resetting itself.

I appreciate the one sentence replies, tho what does that help me?

The EZ Debug LED does not show red lights on RAM or VGA for long. From what I understand the lights show up when you boot cause the motherboard checks if everything is connected correctly and working.

Its probably resetting it self because the RAM is causing the computer to restart after I change bios setting for OC, cause the RAM light is on for the entire period the pc is booting (2-3 seconds) and than restarts and when the pc is on again no more red lights from RAM, only a quick check of VGA happens, but that light turns off cause everything is fine.

It could be that intel has allready rolled out a microcode update to prevent bclk overclocking on locked cpu´s.

Atleast that was something they plannend doing.

Sintezza, does that matter for me tho? I have installed a BIOS that people are using to pass this restriction. Do you mean that maybe my motherboard is of the newer "types" that got this restriction?.

Yes the computer is resetting it self when I increase the bclk. It does not matter if its 101, or 130, it will reset and go back to the normal voltage. I looked around and tried loads and asked loads of people and the RAM is not the problem. Neither is the VGA.

Why the computer resets its self ONLY when i change bclk is weird.
