I'm looking at getting an RX 480, but the only one in my budget is a Sapphire one with an 8 pin power connector:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-11260-02-20G-Nitro-Memory-Graphics/dp/B01IQS6QE6/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1472184262&sr=1-3&keywords=rx+480

My PSU only has one 6pin connector.

Now - I have heard very bad things and very good things about GPU power adaptors ranging from "Hey, I use mine and I get no problems whatsoever" to pictures of melted plastic connector bricks.

There doesn't seem to be a consensus about this so I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction? Are they all bad? Are only certain ones OK to use? Should I not get an adapter at all and instead opt for the less powerful RX 470 with a 6pin? I really don't know.

My 390X came with one. When I went on vacation I gave my 390X to a friend with a bad GPU so he could enjoy while I was gone. He only had a 6 pin power connector, I was able to use the adapter cable that the 390X came with to run it in his machine. The adapter worked, but was insanely stiff. No give, whatever, it was pretty much a straight piece. Heavy use for a week without any issues.

What kind of adaptor was it? I've seen 6pin -> 8pin, 2x Molex -> 8pin, 2x SATA Power -> 8pin (Interestingly no 6pin + Molex -> 8pin which seems to make the most sense to me)

Well if that was fine, considering the 390X draws 275W, 125 more than the 480, I'm more confident now. I'm going to look to see if that particular sapphire GPU I linked comes with one.

Yeah and using this connector it ran fine while overclocked, with all voltages maxed out, in very tight case while running at 90C for 30 minutes running a stress test. I wouldn't be worried about a 480.
