I have a USB stick with some sensitive information on it. I'd like to encrypt this drive so that a password/phrase/decryption key is required to access its contents. The catch is that I work across a variety of OSs (Windows 10, OSX, debian based linux) so the usb drive needs to be useable on any OS I plug it into

What options do I have, short of buying an encrypted usb stick, now that truecrypt is no longer maintained?

Why not use one of Truecrypts successors (for example VeraCrypt)?

this is an option. I believe someone has made a working version of bit locker for linux.

I seem to remember reading that Truecrypt actually required admin privileges to encrypt or decrypt a drive. Is this also true of Veracrypt? Because its unlikely that I'd have admin privs on all the computers Id want to use with the usb stick

VeraCrypt has an wiki-article about that topic: Using VeraCrypt Without Administrator Privileges

Quote

After a system administrator installs VeraCrypt on the system, users without administrator privileges will be able to run VeraCrypt, mount/dismount any type of VeraCrypt volume, load/save data from/to it, and create file-hosted VeraCrypt volumes on the system.
