So I have a dell inspirion 15 7000 which is an i5, and it's been running rather slow lately. I don't think I have a virus, I just think that Windows defender is working overtime. Looking into my task manager I noticed that google chrome and "antimalware service executable" which when extended shows windows defender, are using pretty much all of my disk usage. My ram is at about half, which I also don't think should be happening either, but I think the disk usage is what is slowing it down. Any idea how I can fix this?

Is it pretty low on resource requirement?

That usually means that Windows Defender is scanning your drive. It should only last an hour or two. You can open up defender and manually cancel it.

While I'm at it, I'll also recommend Avast/AVG Free Antivirus.

Well the problem is it does it 24/7 even after an hour or two, and it happens every time I boot up the thing

I'd say yes, I've had it for a few days and the disk usage is always low, unlesss running a manual scan

It's probably actively scanning files of some sort then. Windows Defender isn't too efficient.
